Journaling vs oracle is the essay about why a diary repeats your own questions. This page is the log: a small template so a pull, a daily line, or a hexagram does not dissolve into the same Tuesday paragraph.
You are not writing literature. You are keeping enough structure that a month later you can see whether the practice named anything you could use.
The Four Lines
Date and time (and place if you care).
- Question — one sentence, or “no question / weather.” If you have no question, say so. An empty question is still a kind of question.
- Draw — system, and the actual output (card, hexagram, line, dasha pair). Quote it. Do not paraphrase into a nicer sentence yet.
- Fit (night) — 0 / 1 / 2. Zero: no contact. One: I could stretch it. Two: a specific, checkable thing happened. Score at night, not at noon.
- Next action — six to twelve words. If you cannot name one, write “none.” Coincidence vs pattern cares about this line.
Optional fifth: mood before. One word. You will thank yourself when you notice that 2s cluster on anxious mornings.
That is the whole journal. If you want to write two pages after, that is a diary. Keep it on a different page so the log stays countable. Hit-rate tracking is the science cousin. A Tarot-specific version of this log is how to journal a Tarot reading.
Rules That Keep It Honest
- Write the question before you see the output.
- Do not edit yesterday’s fit score after a new theory arrives.
- One pull per question. A second pull is a new row, labeled “second look.”
- Review every two weeks: count 2s, reread the “none” actions, notice which systems you only consult when you want comfort.
If the log is only 2s, you are scoring like a fan. If it is only 0s and you stay, you may be in a stopping conversation.
What Not to Put in the Log
Screenshots of other people’s charts. Medical or legal conclusions. A running argument with a partner about who “the Tower” is. If a reading is shared, use how to share.
The Whisper history can be a log if you export or copy the line into these four fields. An app streak is not a journal. A streak is a gamification of opening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Paper or app? Whichever you will open at night. The night score is the load-bearing habit.
How long before I judge the practice? Twenty dated rows minimum. Three dramatic days are availability. What to do with an old row months later: how to revisit an old reading.
Is this the same as a decision journal? No. Decision journals record choices. This records pulls. You can run both: decision journal + oracle.
