A card repeats. A stranger says the word you pulled this morning. Two charts rhyme on Saturn. The mind wants a courtroom: meant or random.
Those are the wrong boxes. Random processes produce clumps (birthday paradox, clustering illusion). Meaningful-feeling clumps are also how people notice a real habit. The useful split is coincidence versus usable pattern — a pattern you can do something with besides gasp.
Jung’s word for meaningful coincidence is a history lesson, not a sorting rule: synchronicity explained, what Jung meant. Availability makes the gasp louder: availability heuristic.
Three Questions That Do Work
1. What’s the base rate? How often would this rhyme happen if nobody was looking? Six of cups in a 78-card deck is not rare across a month of daily pulls. Hearing your city name on the radio the day you consider moving is less rare than it feels if you are already scanning for the city.
2. Does it repeat when you are not primed? Write the pull, close the app, live the day. If the rhyme only appears when you hunt, you have a searchlight. If the same friction shows up on three unprompted Tuesdays, you have a candidate pattern in the life, which the oracle may have named or missed.
3. Does it change a next action? A usable pattern alters a small, ethical next step: send the email, wait a day, ask a clearer question. A coincidence that only produces a screenshot is a souvenir.
If you cannot name a next action that would still make sense without the omen, you are decorating.
What to Do With Each Bucket
Coincidence. Keep it. Tell it as a story. Do not promote it to a law. Do not buy a stone.
Usable pattern. Put it in a divination journal with a date and a next action. Review in two weeks. If the action helped the week, the pattern earned rent. If not, demote it.
Ambiguous. Most rhymes. Stay in useful uncertainty for a set time instead of forcing a court.
This is not a claim that the sky is mute. It is a claim that your nervous system is loud, and loudness is not a method.
Frequently Asked Questions
Isn’t this just skepticism? It is bookkeeping. Skepticism is a mood. Bookkeeping is a habit.
What if I need the omen to feel brave? Then the omen is a ritual prop. Label it that way. Ritual without belief is allowed.
Where does Jung fit? As a description of how meaning feels when two streams line up. Not as a license to skip base rates.
