Tversky and Kahneman’s availability heuristic is a memory shortcut: events that come to mind easily are treated as more frequent or more diagnostic than they are. A plane crash is available. A safe landing is not. A week when Mercury is retrograde and your laptop dies is available. The four quiet retrograde weeks are not.
Horoscopes and daily oracles live on this shortcut. The practice hands you a vivid label in the morning. Any matching mess that afternoon is easy to retrieve later. The mismatch is boring and drops out of the sample.
This is not the same mechanism as the Barnum effect (vague lines that fit anyone) or confirmation bias (preferring hits once you are invested). Availability is about what the mind can grab. You can be trying to be fair and still have an unfair sample, because the mind is a highlight reel.

How a Daily Line Becomes “Proof”
- You read “communication friction.”
- A Slack thread goes badly at 3 p.m.
- Tonight the thread is the story of the day.
- Next month, asked whether the app “works,” you retrieve that Thursday.
The unread days — the communication-friction mornings that were fine — never enter the story. Frequency is inferred from drama.
Retrograde seasons, eclipse weeks, and “void Moon” labels are especially available. They have names. Names are souvenirs. Souvenirs get counted twice.
What a Fairer Sample Looks Like
If you want to know whether a class of line is doing work, you need the boring days.
- Write the morning line before the day.
- At night, score fit: 0 (no), 1 (stretch), 2 (specific and true).
- Do this for twenty days, not for the three you screenshot.
- Look at the average, not the 2s.
That is closer to the hit-rate habit than to a vibe. It will not settle metaphysics. It will stop a single vivid Thursday from posing as a study.
If you do not want a study, you do not have to run one. Then do not talk as if you ran one.
What This Does Not Mean
It does not mean you are foolish for noticing a rhyme. Availability is how memory works for sports, medicine, and news too. It means a rhyme is a candidate, not a base rate.
It does not cancel a practice that is useful as a question-generator. It cancels the sentence “this keeps coming true” when what you have is a stack of available anecdotes.
Jung’s meaningful coincidence is a different essay: synchronicity, what Jung meant. Sorting coincidence from a usable pattern: coincidence vs usable pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is availability just confirmation bias? Confirmation is what you prefer to count. Availability is what you can count because it is loud. They stack. They are not identical.
Does this apply to natal charts too? Yes, for life-story hits (the year Saturn “got you”). A whole biography is an availability machine. A log is less so.
Should I stop reading daily lines? Only if the line is making the sample worse and you care about the sample. A stopping rule is a separate decision.
