A Decision Journal Plus an Oracle: Two Columns, One Choice

How to combine a decision journal with an oracle pull: two columns, a pre-commitment, and a review — so the card does not get to make the choice.

A decision journal (the Kahneman / Klein habit) writes down, before the outcome, what you decided, why, what you expect, and what would change your mind. It exists to catch hindsight.

An oracle pull is a second, optional column: a hexagram, a card, a daily line. It is not a third option on the ballot. If the pull gets to cast the vote, you no longer have a decision journal. You have a coin with extra liturgy.

History of leaders who kept an oracle in the room: decision-makers and oracles. Why structure lowers noise: cognitive load and rituals. The pull log itself: divination journal.

The Two-Column Page

Left — decision (first, always)

  • Choice in one sentence (“I will decline the offer / I will wait until Friday / I will ask for the number”)
  • Reasons (three bullets, including the ugly one)
  • Expected outcome in 30 days
  • What would falsify this (a number, a date, a conversation)

Right — oracle (after the left is written)

  • System and output, quoted
  • One sentence: “This names ___ that I under-weighted”
  • You may revise the left only if you can write the new reason in your own words, without “because the card said”

If you cannot fill the left, you are not ready for the right. Go walk. Useful uncertainty is a valid state. An oracle is a poor substitute for a missing criterion.

What the Right Column Is For

It is for the question you did not put in the reasons: the body, the person you are avoiding, the cost you dressed as a virtue. Journaling vs oracle is about that redirect.

It is not for medical, legal, or leave-the-house-now questions. Necessity does not get a hexagram veto.

Review

Thirty days later, read only the left first. Did the world match the expectation? Then peek at the right. If the pull was vivid and the decision was fine without it, the pull was atmosphere. If the pull named the thing that actually broke, keep the practice. If the pull talked you into a choice you now resent, write that down in large letters. That is the failure mode this page exists to catch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pull first to “see what I think”? You can. Then you do not have a decision journal. You have an omen-led mood. Call it that.

Which system? The one whose vocabulary you can translate into a reason. If you cannot translate, it cannot enter the left column.

Is this believing? It is using a prompt. Ritual without belief.
