How to Journal a Tarot Reading: Positions, Reversals, One Action

A Tarot journal is not a second diary. Record the question, the cards in their jobs, a reversal note if you use one, and a single next action — then stop writing.

Most Tarot notebooks die the same way. Day one is a careful copy of the Three of Pentacles. Day four is a paragraph about the roommate. Day twelve is “Tower???” and a grocery list. By week three the cards have stopped earning their line.

The general log — question, draw, night fit score, next action — is already written: how to keep a divination journal. Use that template for any system. This page is the Tarot layer that template cannot hold: positions, a reversal note, and one action that belongs to a card rather than to a mood.

The essay about why a diary repeats your own questions is journaling versus oracle. Write the cards down so a month later you can see whether a spread named anything you used.

What a Card-Specific Entry Has to Capture

A Tarot reading is not one symbol. It is cards sitting in jobs. If you only write “Death, felt heavy,” you have logged a sticker. If you write “Death in ‘what is ending in this project’ — the weekly meeting that exists so no one has to decide,” you have logged a reading.

Minimum fields, in this order:

  1. Date, deck, layout. “Nov 3, everyday RWS, three-card: situation / friction / next action.” The layout name matters. A card in “friction” is not the same sentence as that card in “advice.”
  2. Question, copied before the shuffle. If you change the question after you see the cards, label the change. Question craft is most of the reading; the journal should show the actual prompt, not the improved one.
  3. Cards in position order, name plus upright/reversed if you use that rule. Do not skip to the pretty one.
  4. One sentence per position in ordinary language. Not the guidebook paragraph. Your sentence.
  5. Reversal note, or the word “upright-only.” If a card is reversed, write which rule you used — blockage, internalization, excess — in five words. See reversed cards. If you do not use reversals, write that you do not, so future-you does not invent a tone.
  6. One action, six to twelve words, tied to one position. Not “be more mindful.” “Email Sam the scope before Thursday.” If you cannot name an action, write “none” and which card made action feel dishonest.

That is the entry. If you want to write two pages of feeling, start a new page and call it a diary. Mixed pages make the log uncountable, which is how people decide the practice “wasn’t accurate” when they never kept a practice.

Why Positions Are the Load-Bearing Line

People remember images. They forget jobs. A month later, the Tower is a mood and the Five of Cups is a breakup, and both cards might have been in “what I am contributing.” That is a different story.

When you log a one-card or three-card pull, write the job next to the card every time. You will remember the drama, not the job.

A usable three-card line looks like this:

  • Situation — Eight of Swords: I have treated the inbox as a locked room.
  • Friction — Queen of Cups: I am managing other people’s weather instead of my list.
  • Next action — Two of Pentacles: pick two commitments, drop the third this week.

The sentence of the spread is then one line: “I am staying stuck by caretaking, and the move is a juggle I can actually count.” If you cannot write that sentence, you are still translating glyphs. Look at the pictures again. Do not add a clarifier into the journal as a fourth unofficial position. A clarifier is a new row, labeled, or it is fishing.

Larger layouts follow the same rule. Beginner spreads stay finishable when jobs stay attached to cards. A Celtic Cross that becomes ten keywords with no jobs is a poster. Log all ten jobs or do not log the Cross.

The Reversal Note Is a Rule, Not a Mood

Reversals are optional. Journals pretend they are not, because an upside-down card looks like extra information. It is extra tone, and only if you decided the rule before you shuffled.

Write one of these, not a novel:

  • “Reversal rule: blockage. 8 of Wands Rx — messages not landing.”
  • “Reversal rule: internalization. Strength Rx — the containment is private.”
  • “Upright only this month.”

If you change rules mid-month, say so on the date you changed. Otherwise you will compare January’s “bad cards” to February’s “blocked cards” and call it a pattern. It was a method change.

Do not use the reversal line to soften a card you disliked. “Tower Rx, maybe it’s not that bad” is a veto. The journal’s job is to keep you from editing. If the picture does not fit, score the fit at night in the general template. Do not rewrite the card in the afternoon.

One Action, Then You Are Allowed to Close

Tarot-as-guidance fails when the notebook becomes a place to feel complete. Completeness is a feeling. An action is a test.

Tie the action to a position so you know which card you are obeying. “Next action from card 3: ask for the deadline in writing.” If every action in a month comes from the advice card and never from friction, you are using the spread as a coach you already agree with. Once in a while, let the friction card assign the action: “Name the cost in the meeting.”

The Whisper daily card can be a one-line journal: date, card, one sentence, one action. It is a name, not a paragraph. If you also pull a physical three-card spread, log them as separate rows. That is two readings.

A Twenty-Minute Weekly Reread That Stays About Cards

Every two weeks, reread the card names, not your feelings. Which cards repeated in the same job? A Tower in “situation” is not a Tower in “advice.” Which suits dominated? How often was the action “none”? Did any reversal note change the next day? If never, drop reversals for a month.

You are not grading the deck. You are grading whether sentences stayed attached to positions. Guidance, not prediction is the standard: a hit is a name you could use, not an event that arrived on time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Paper or app for Tarot specifically? Paper is better for copying pictures; an app is better for search. If you use both, the positions and the action must live in the same place. Split records are how actions disappear.

Should I photograph every spread? Optional. A photo without jobs is a collage. If you photograph, write the jobs on a slip in the frame or immediately under the image.

How do I log a reading I did for someone else? Log your question, their initials if they consent to a record, the cards and jobs, and your process note — not their secrets. If you cannot keep their interior out of the notebook, do not keep a notebook of other people’s readings.

What if I pull the same card two days in a row? Log it twice. Repeating is allowed. The second day is not a glitch and not a command to add cards.

Some patterns only appear when the reading becomes personal.
