Stuck is not a strategy problem. Stuck is sitting on the edge of a bed holding a phone, rewriting the same sentence, or walking past a lease you have not signed. The I Ching will not stand up for you. It can name the condition of the fork so you stop calling your delay a mystery.
This is a personal protocol. It is not a business page. Hiring, investment, and board-facing questions have a different, longer method: I Ching for business decisions. Do not run that six-step professional sequence on whether to text your father. Do not run this three-step sequence on a term sheet.
Read the figure with how to interpret a reading. Phrase it with question hygiene. Refuse the coins when the stop list says so. Notebook cousin: a decision journal.
What Counts as Stuck
Three ordinary forks cover most of the private cases.
Stay or leave — apartment, city, relationship, the job already finished in your head. Send the email — the draft exists; the button is the remaining world. Wait — caution that may be fear, or patience that may be a deadline you are pretending not to see.
If you do not have the facts, you are under-informed, not stuck. Get the fact. If you have already decided and want the hexagram to overrule you, you are hiding. That case is on the stop list.
The Three Steps
Step 1: Write the Fork in Ordinary Language
One sentence that a friend could disagree with. Not a mood. A fork.
- “Stay in this flat through August, or give notice by Friday.”
- “Send the apology tonight, or let the silence stand.”
- “Call the clinic this week, or wait for the pain to name itself.” (If the second half is medical, stop: that is not a hexagram job.)
Then rewrite the sentence so it is not “Should I.” The book is a decision text, not a manager. Convert:
| Fork you are gripping | Question that can meet a hexagram |
|---|---|
| Should I leave? | What is the nature of staying through this season? |
| Should I send it? | What is the quality of this unsent message in the relationship? |
| Should I wait? | What kind of waiting is this — ripening, or stall? |
If you cannot convert the sentence, you want a coin toss. Use an actual coin and own it. Do not dress a coin toss in Zhou dynasty clothing.
Write the converted question. Date it. This is the only question for the sitting. The stance behind that conversion is questions, not orders.
Step 2: Cast Once, Then Interpret in Order
Three coins, six throws, or a single computational figure if that is your honest method. Once.
Read in order: question, primary hexagram, changing lines (link, do not invent a second theory), relating hexagram as tilt. The paragraph template on the interpretation page is enough. You do not need a nuclear hexagram to get out of a chair.
Watch for cheap translations. Hexagram 33 names a kind of withdrawal; it does not file your notice. Hexagram 5 names a weather of waiting; an endless wait is a hidden decision to stay. The relating figure is a slope, not a date — if the slope is Conflict, sending the email may be the interruption. Write the paragraph the same day. If you cannot, you are still bargaining with the Image.
Step 3: Name a Next Act That Does Not Require the Book to Decide
Twelve words or fewer. The act must be something a stranger could see.
- “Email the landlord the notice draft by Thursday noon.”
- “Send the existing apology without the third paragraph.”
- “Walk for twenty minutes, then open the application.”
- “None — the honest act is to keep the job through the 30th.”
“None” is allowed. It is a decision. Write it so you cannot later claim the book left you in fog.
Then close the bag for a defined interval. Fourteen days is a decent default for a life fork. If you pick up the coins on night three, you are running the veto loop. The first sitting remains the sitting.
A decision journal entry on day fourteen is the audit: did the named weather show up, and did you do the act? You are not grading the Zhou dynasty. You are grading whether you used a text to move.
Three Worked Forks (Not Verdicts)
Stay or leave the city. “What is the nature of another year here?” Primary 39, Obstruction; tilt toward 15, Modesty. The next act is not “move.” It might be “price one city and one stay option on the same page.” You still pick the ticket.
Send the email. “What is the quality of this unsent reply?” Primary 37, the Family, no changing lines. The silence is a role. Next act: a four-line note, or “none — I am choosing the role for now.” Stability is a picture, not permission.
Wait. “What kind of waiting is this delay?” Primary 47, Oppression; tilt toward Conflict. The act is a calendar square, or an admission that you prefer the contest. Waiting that cannot name its object is a stay decision in costume.
Illustrations of method, not a lookup table. Hexagram 11 in your sitting did not “mean move.”
What This Protocol Refuses
It refuses a second system in the same hour. No clarifying Tarot spread to vote. No rune pulled “just to see.”
It refuses using a daily hexagram as the stuck-decision sitting. A daily name is weather for a Thursday. A fork needs a written question and a closed bag.
It refuses treating the I Ching as a person who “told you” to stay. You stay. The book provided a vocabulary. If you need to tell someone why, tell them your reasons. “The hexagram” is not a reason they can live with, and it should not be one you can hide in.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if both sides of the fork feel like the same hexagram? Then the fork may be false. You may be choosing between two costumes of one condition. Write the condition. The act might be smaller than stay/leave.
Can I use this for a relationship stay-or-leave? You can use it for your stance. You cannot use it to manage the other person. If the question is really “Do they love me?”, that is on the stop list and on the relationships page.
Why not the business protocol? I am stuck about a job. If the job question is “what am I not seeing after I ran the numbers,” use the business page. If the job question is “I lie awake and cannot send the resignation,” you are in this page’s territory. The difference is whether you need a professional analysis partner or a personal motion protocol.
What if I do the act and hate it? That is still a completed protocol. Log the hate. Do not recast to launder the act. A later sitting needs a new condition.
