I Ching for Relationships: How to Consult the Book About Two People

The I Ching can describe the quality of a bond without pretending to decide it. Here is how to ask relationship questions, how to read hexagrams as dynamics, and what not to outsource to the coins.

The I Ching will not tell you whether to stay. It will not tell you what the other person feels. It can describe the quality of a situation between two people — the weather of the bond, the kind of movement in it, the place where force would make things worse.

That is a different job from a synastry chart, which compares two birth maps. The I Ching is usually one question, one cast, one hexagram (or two, if lines change). Use it when you need a description of this conversation, not a lifetime compatibility brand.

Parent: what is the I Ching. Question stance: questions, not orders.

Questions That Stay Ethical

Write about the situation you are in, not the other person’s interior.

Use

  • What is the quality of this partnership right now?
  • What am I not seeing about how I show up in this?
  • What would holding still cost? What would moving cost?
  • What is the nature of the distance between us?

Avoid

  • Does X love me?
  • Will we marry?
  • Should I leave? (The book cannot hold your values for you. Split into costs, then decide.)
  • What is X thinking?

If you catch yourself hoping for a hexagram that “means yes,” you are already deciding. Put the coins down and write the decision.

How to Read a Relationship Hexagram

Cast with coins after the question is written.

Read the hexagram as a dynamic, not as a person. Hexagram 31 (Influence / Wooing) names a mutual pull. Hexagram 38 (Opposition) names a facing-apart. Hexagram 37 (The Family) names a household structure. Hexagram 44 (Coming to Meet) names an encounter that may be more force than foundation. None of those is a verdict on someone’s character.

The lower trigram can be read as your stance; the upper as the field or the other — if and only if you stay humble about that mapping. It is a convenience, not a law. See trigrams.

Changing lines matter more in relationship casts than people expect. A stable Hexagram 32 (Duration) is a different sentence from 32 changing toward 31. The first names staying-power. The second names staying-power already in motion toward a new kind of pull.

Two People, Two Casts

Sometimes the honest method is two questions: “the quality of this from my side” and, later, “the quality of the shared situation.” Two hexagrams. Do not cast a third to break a tie. Ties are information.

Do not cast on someone without their knowledge as a way to manage them. That is surveillance with extra literature.

What to Pair It With

If you want a birth-data view of two lives, use synastry, BaZi compatibility, or The Whisper’s relationship reading. The I Ching remains the present-tense instrument. When the hexagram and the birth systems rhyme, you have a theme. When they disagree, believe the situation in the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hexagrams are “good for love”? The wrong question. 31 and 32 are often discussed as relationship figures. A “good” hexagram is one that names the actual weather.

Can I ask about a crush who does not know me? You can ask about your longing. You cannot ethically ask the book to manage them.

Is this better than astrology for couples? It is faster and more situational. Astrology is structural. Use both or neither; do not hold a vote.

What if I get Hexagram 12 (Standstill)? It names a blocked field. The work is usually not force. Read the text. Then look at your week, not at a forum’s “meaning.”
