Reading for Yourself vs Others: Two Jobs, Two Blind Spots

Reading for yourself vs others: how to catch self-reading blind spots, and the ethics that change when the chart or cards belong to someone else.

How to share a reading is what you owe when you forward. This page is earlier: who is the subject, and which job you are actually doing.

Reading for yourself and reading for someone else are not two intensities of the same hobby. They are different jobs. The first fails by flattery and panic. The second fails by trespass. Mixing the jobs is how a person becomes both the client and the prosecutor.

Prediction ethics — what a sentence is allowed to claim — live on ethics of prediction. Table rules for cards, medical and legal refusals, exes, and children live on a different page: tarot ethics. Use that page when the question is what you refuse to pull. Use this page when the question is whose interior you are narrating.

Job A: The Chart Is Yours

You have consent. You also have the worst seat in the house.

Blind spots that show up on schedule:

  • You already know the ending you want. The line becomes a stamp.
  • You already fear an ending. The line becomes a threat.
  • You are lonely, angry, or underslept. The system inherits the mood and hands it back in a prettier font. See confirmation bias.
  • You treat a daily line as a personality, then defend the personality when a friend disagrees.

A workable counter-method:

  1. Write the question before the output. One sentence. “Weather” is allowed if you say so.
  2. Write a disconfirming scene — what would have to happen for this line to be a miss — before you leave the desk.
  3. Score at night, not at noon. Template: divination journal.
  4. Do not read for yourself about another person’s hidden motives. That is Job B wearing your birth data. “How do I ask them about plans” is yours. “What are they thinking” is not a self-reading. It is a third-party pull you dressed as introspection.

If the output is harsh, you still do not get a second pull the same night. Sit with it: sitting with a difficult reading. Self-reading is where the second pull does the most damage, because no one is watching you cheat.

Self-reading is allowed to be ordinary. A morning line that names “do the email” is a success. A morning line that names your cosmic wound is often a delay.

Job B: Someone Asked

An adult asked. They are in the room, or they sent a question they still own. That is the whole gate. “I was curious” is not an ask. A birthday you know from a party invite is not a license. A partner’s data you used to “understand us” without saying so is a synastry trespass, not a consult.

When the chart or the cards are not yours, your job is translation and boundary, not revelation.

Different ethics, in practice:

  • They own the question. If they ask “will I get the job,” you can help them reframe to “what am I treating as evidence this week.” You cannot answer the will. Questions to ask is written for pair-reports; the same three-part shape (moment, uncertainty, choice) works for a solo friend.
  • You do not diagnose a body, a court case, or a third person who is not present. The tarot ethics page lists the hard refusals. Astrology has the same refusals. A transit is not a biopsy.
  • You do not send them home with a fate plot. “Your Saturn year will be hard” is a headline. “Saturn on your Sun can describe a season of extra cost; here is how we will check it in ninety days” is a method.
  • You do not become their daily app. One sitting, one next action they choose, then you close. If they want a practice, point them at starting a divination practice, not at your inbox.
  • Minors: do not. Not as a cute story, not as a “family chart.”

If you are reading cards for another person at a table, the consent-and-stop craft is how to read tarot for someone else. This page does not repeat that spread hygiene. It names the split that still applies if the engine is a natal chart, a hexagram, or a Life Path.

The Mixed Case: Two Charts, One Ask

Relationship work is where the jobs collide.

If only you consented, you may read your experience of the pair. You may not cite their Saturn as a character flaw. Hygiene: how to read a relationship reading. A protocol that refuses the score: compatibility without verdicts.

If both people asked, you still do not get to decide the relationship. You get to name a dialect — talk, rest, money — and hand back one conversation they could have without you.

If neither asked and you pulled anyway, that is not a mixed case. That is a violation. Delete the file. Do not “just peek.”

A Ten-Minute Sort Before You Begin

Write the answers. If you cannot, do not open the tool.

The last row is where people fail after a good sitting. A self-reading you post is a publication you chose. A reading you did for a friend, pasted into a group chat, is their interior with your caption. Sharing rules stay on the parent page.

When You Should Switch Jobs

Switch from self to not reading when you notice you are pulling about them and scoring it as about you.

Switch from other to referral when the question is a crisis you are not trained for. An oracle sitting is not a clinic. Switch from other to self only after they have left. Do not use their chart as evening entertainment.

The Whisper can be the engine for either job. For Job A, one line and close. For Job B, they should be the one who signs in. Your screenshot is not their archive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it unethical to read for myself? No. It is hard. Hard is not the same as forbidden. The ethic is honesty about the seat.

Can I read for a partner if we live together? Only with an ask, a question they own, and a stop when the kitchen gets prosecutorial. Cohabitation is not consent.

What if they ask for a yes/no? Help them write a better question or refuse the sitting. Yes/no is a verdict costume.

How is this different from tarot ethics? Tarot ethics lists what you will not pull (bodies, courts, exes, children). This page lists who the subject is, and how self-reading fails even when the pull is allowed.

Where next? Forwarding: how to share. Card-table refusals: tarot ethics. A harsh line you already have: sitting with a difficult reading.

Some patterns only appear when the reading becomes personal.
