The form has a time field. You do not have a time. People in this position either abandon the reading or type 12:00 because the field looks required. Both moves are usually worse than leaving it blank.
You do not need a birth time to start a compatibility reading. You need a birth time only for claims that depend on the exact hour. Ascendant, houses, house overlays, and the BaZi Hour pillar sit in that second group. Dates, most planetary positions, Life Path numbers, and three BaZi pillars do not.
The Western field guide is synastry without a birth time. The product-shaped version of dates alone is birthday-only compatibility. Overlay technique, when you do have times, is house overlay synastry.
A short answer by feature
| Feature | Birth time needed? |
|---|---|
| Life Path and other date numerology | No |
| Sun-sign or planetary-sign comparison (most planets) | No |
| Moon sign on a day the Moon changes sign | Often yes |
| Synastry aspects between planets | Usually no, with Moon caution |
| Rising sign, Descendant, house overlays | Yes |
| BaZi Year, Month, Day pillars | No (watch the New Year rule) |
| BaZi Hour pillar | Yes |
| Composite or Davison angles | Yes, if you want those angles to mean anything |
If your question is about planning style, priorities, or a repeating argument, you can begin without times. If your question is “where do their planets fall in my houses,” you need recorded local times for both people.
People sometimes hunt for a time because the software looks unfinished without houses. Unfinished is the honest state. A wheel with twelve houses and a guessed hour is finished the way a form with autofill is finished: every box has ink, and some of the ink is invented. Prefer the thinner report you can defend.
When it is worth searching for the hour
Search when house language is the point of the sitting, when a practitioner you hired requires it, or when you already have one time and the missing one is likely findable (a birth certificate, a family Bible, a hospital record).
Do not delay a useful date-based sitting for months while you wait for a relative to remember “sometime after lunch.” After-lunch is not a time.
A rectified time — an hour inferred from life events — is an interpretation. If you use one, mark every house sentence as provisional. The certificate you cannot find is not a moral failure, and the reading you can already run is not a consolation prize.
What a placeholder actually does
A noon or 6:00 a.m. default lets software draw houses. The houses belong to that default, not to the person. Paragraphs that depend on those houses will sound as sure as any other paragraph. That is the danger.
If a tool will not run without a time, use a different tool or accept that you are reading a hypothetical hour. Whisper’s Relationship Reading treats time and city as optional. Use that option.
One time, not two
Enter the time you have. Read house overlays only in the direction that is timed. The untimed chart remains a date chart. Do not “share” the known hour across both people.
How this changes the question you ask
Timed question: “When their Saturn lands in my 4th, what should I notice about home?” Untimed question: “What happens when I want the weekend planned and they want it open?”
Both are legitimate. Only one is available without clocks. What you need is the full input list.
What to do in Whisper
Enter both full dates. Add times and cities only when you have them. Write the situation in ordinary language. Continue with Google for a free preview; no card is required. The full reading is an optional US$30 one-time purchase, with no membership.
Create a preview with the details you actually have.
A missing hour is a boundary, not a failure. The reading that respects the boundary is the one you can take into a conversation.
A fictional search that can wait
Priya wants a compatibility reading with someone born in 1991 whose mother says “it was dark.” Priya could spend a week on rectification forums. She could also enter two dates, skip the time, and ask about the actual stall: they text all day and go quiet in person.
The second path answers the week she is living. The first path answers a curiosity that may never have a record. She can still look for the certificate later and rerun the sitting if house language becomes the point.
Questions readers ask
Will the reading be wrong without a time?
It will be incomplete in the time-sensitive layers. It will be wrong if it pretends those layers were calculated.
Is city enough without a time?
No. City sets the zone and the house math for a known local time. Alone it does not create an Ascendant.
Does Whisper require a time?
No. Birth time and city are optional on the current Relationship Reading. The product page is the authority if that changes.
Editorial note
Need-for-time rules follow ordinary Western house practice and Four Pillars structure. They are not a claim that timed readings predict better relationships.
