House Overlay Synastry: Where Their Planets Land in Your Chart

Aspects say how two planets talk. House overlay says where their planet walks into your life. Their Saturn in your 4th is not the same sentence as their Saturn square your Moon — though you may have both.

You drop their natal planets into your house wheel (and, if you are fair, yours into theirs). The house list is the same twelve houses you already use. The guest is theirs.

A Workable First Pass

Look at where their Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, and Saturn land in your wheel. Then reverse it.

Their Sun in your 1st / 7th / 10th. They light your body-tone, your partnership door, or your public work. Bright. Easy to over-center.

Their Moon in your 4th. They become kitchen weather. See Moon contacts.

Their Venus in your 2nd or 7th. Taste and bond sit on money or on the “us” door. Still not a salary forecast.

Their Mars in your 6th or 10th. Heat in the grind or the career. Read work compatibility before you write a romance.

Their Saturn in your 4th, 7th, or 10th. A serious guest in home, pair, or job. Saturn contacts.

Empty houses are normal. The overlay is not a bingo card.

House System Arguments

Whole sign vs Placidus will move guests near cusps. If a planet is within 2–3° of a cusp, say “on the 4th/5th fence” and do not die on a forum. Two house systems that disagree by a whole house mean you should not use the overlay for a decision.

Location: houses are built for the natal birth place, not the city you live in now (unless you are doing relocation, which is a different technique).

Overlay Is Not Composite

Putting their planets in your houses keeps you as the host. A composite builds a third wheel. Do not say “their Venus in our 7th” unless you mean the composite 7th. Pronouns matter.

Mutuality

Their Sun in your 7th and your Sun in their 12th is an unequal visibility deal. One of you is a partner-shaped light; the other is a behind-the-scenes light. Name the inequality. Do not moralize it. Friendship overlays (friendship compatibility) use the same geometry with a 11th-house emphasis instead of a 7th-house script.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is their Venus in my 7th a soulmate marker? It is a taste-in-the-partnership-house marker. Plenty of those never date. Plenty of marriages have Venus elsewhere.

What if I only have my time, not theirs? You can overlay their planets into your houses. You cannot reverse it. Say so. Half a technique is still information.

Do intercepted houses change this? Only in quadrant systems. If you do not use intercepts, do not add them for spice.
