The Life Palace (命宫, mìnggōng) is the first room a Zi Wei plate asks you to find and the room beginners turn into a sun sign. Ming Gong is the self-room: how a life is occupied. It is not a personality badge, and it does not get to answer a work question by itself.
The full room list is on the 12 palaces. This page is Ming Gong specifically — how the pointer is placed, what the room can claim, and how it pairs with Body and Career. It will not tour the other eleven.
How the Life Palace Is Found
Every plate has the same twelve domains in a fixed order. What rotates is which square is labeled Life. That starting square is calculated from birth month and birth hour (year and day help place the stars; month and hour move the pointer).
The classical count, in outline:
- Treat the first solar month (Tiger / Yin, from Lichun) as a starting palace.
- Count the birth month along the plate.
- From that month-palace, count the birth hour in the direction your school uses.
Software does this. You should know that hour moves the pointer. A guessed 3 p.m. versus a recorded 5 p.m. can put Life one room over, which then slides every other label with it. If the time is unknown, say the Life Palace is provisional. Do not rectify from a quiz and then treat Ming Gong as natal fact.
Schools also argue about lunar month versus solar month. That argument changes edge births. It does not change the idea: Life is a calculated seat, not “the first house because we always start there.”
Once Life is seated, the other palaces follow in order around the square. Career will always sit a fixed number of rooms from Life. Travel will always face Life. You do not pick a favorite room and call it Ming Gong because the star there is flattering.
Why It Is Not Personality Alone
The major star or pair in the Life Palace is the chart’s first sentence. A Life Palace with Zi Wei names a quality of occupying the center. A Life Palace with Po Jun names a quality of breaking and restarting. Those are occupational metaphors for a life, not Myers-Briggs letters.
Three reasons “Life Palace = personality” fails:
The room is a domain, not a type. Stars describe how the domain is engaged. “How I occupy a life” includes temperament and also includes the conditions around that temperament — brightness, auxiliaries, natal Si Hua. A temple Sun in Life and a fallen Sun in Life share a name and do not share a volume.
Other rooms still have jobs. A work question that never leaves Ming Gong is a person asking “who am I” when they needed Career. Life colors how Career is occupied. It does not replace Career. The read-order guide puts Life first and the question-palace next for this reason.
Empty of majors is allowed. A Life Palace with no major star is not a missing personality. The self-room is then told by minors, transformations, and the palaces that face or flank it. Paying to “fill” an empty Ming Gong is a sales move.
If you want a single-letter self, BaZi Day Master is the closer tool — and even that is a stem, not a life. Zi Wei’s gift is rooms. Using only Ming Gong throws the gift away.
Pairing: Body Palace
The Body Palace (身宫, shēngōng) is a second calculated seat. The count also uses month and hour, in a different direction from Life. Sometimes Body lands on the same square as Life. Sometimes it lands on Spouse, Career, Wealth, or another room.
Classical readings treat the pair as:
- Life — the natal occupation of a life; the “given” seat
- Body — how the life is carried; the acquired, bodily, later-weight seat
When they coincide, the tradition says the person lives in one seat: the self-room is also the carrying-room. That is a concentration, not a prize. When they differ, read both. A Life Palace of Tian Ji (mechanism, strategy) with Body in the Career palace is a different picture from the same Life with Body in the Spirit palace. The first carries the self through work. The second carries the self through the inner store.
You do not need the arithmetic to use the pair. You need the habit: after you name Ming Gong and its star, ask where Shen Gong sat. If your app hides Body, the plate is incomplete for this page.
Pairing: Career Palace
Career (官禄宫) is not calculated separately. It is the office-room a fixed walk from Life. The pair is the one work questions actually need:
- Life — who is walking in
- Career — the job-function they walk into
A Life Palace of Tian Tong (ease, blessing-star imagery) with Qi Sha in Career is not a contradiction. It is a self-room that prefers ease and a work-room that prefers the blade. The ordinary-language sentence is: “I occupy a life as someone who wants the temperature low, and I work in a room that runs hot.” That sentence is useful on a Tuesday. “You are a peaceful person, therefore you should not take hard jobs” is a verdict, and this page will not issue it.
Spouse faces Career on the usual square. If the question is “work versus the bond,” read those two as a pair and let Life color both. Do not let Ming Gong cast the whole film.
Travel faces Life. “How I am” against “how the road meets me” is the other pairing worth learning in week one. After that, stop collecting rooms until you have a question.
What The Whisper Uses
The Whisper takes the Life Palace major star (or the main pair) and the year’s four transformations. It does not narrate Body, and it does not walk Career every morning. A daily line that mentions work is not a Career-palace reading. If you want the pairs on this page, open the plate and write three notes: Life star, Body seat, Career star. Those notes are the natal layer. Weather comes later.
Ming Gong is the first clause of the plate. Keep it as a clause. The sentence still needs a domain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can siblings born the same year share a Life Palace? They can. Month, day, and hour usually split them. Same-year, different-hour births are the usual demonstration that Ming Gong is not a zodiac animal.
What if Life and Body are the same palace? The self-room is also the carrying-room. Read that concentration. Do not call it luckier.
Is the Life Palace star my “Zi Wei sign”? It is the closest the system has to a headline. It is still a room with a star in it, not a twelve-type badge. Read brightness and the question-palace before you print a mug.
Do I need birth time? For a stable Ming Gong, yes. Unknown hour: use BaZi day and month, or accept that Zi Wei is the wrong tool today.
Where next? 12 palaces if you need the other room names. Four transformations if you already have Life and want weather. Auxiliary stars only after the major in Ming Gong is named.
