Zi Wei Four Transformations: Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji

Si Hua — the four transformations — overlay palaces; they do not replace them. Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, and Hua Ji are weather on furniture. One worked palace, not a fortune list.

The four transformations (四化, sìhuà) are the layer people treat as a fortune cookie. They see 化禄 and hear “money.” They see 化忌 and hear “disaster.” That is a mistranslation of a structural idea.

Si Hua are four kinds of weather that sit on stars, and therefore on the palaces those stars occupy. They do not replace the furniture. A Career palace that holds Wu Qu is still a standards-and-numbers work room when the year paints it with Hua Ke. It is still that room when the year paints it with Hua Ji. The paint changes how the room fricts. It does not evict the occupant.

Read-order: how to read a Zi Wei chart. System frame: what is Zi Wei Dou Shu. The furniture itself: 14 major stars.

The Four Names, Without a Fortune List

Each year — and, in natal work, each birth year — four stars receive one of four marks. The marks are functions, not prizes.

化禄 Hua Lu — flow, ease of throughput, the channel opens. Classically tied to prosperity because things that move are easier to collect. In practice: the palace this star sits in is less jammed. Lu is not a deposit. It is reduced friction in that domain.

化权 Hua Quan — grip, authority, the hand closes. The palace takes on a quality of holding and directing. Quan is not a promotion. It is more lever in that room, which can be useful or heavy depending on what the room already is.

化科 Hua Ke — clarity, exam-light, reputation that can be checked. Ke is the mark that makes a quality legible to other people. It is not a diploma. It is the year (or the natal tint) in which that palace is easier to see.

化忌 Hua Ji — the sore spot, the snag, the place attention is expensive. Ji is the most abused mark. It is not a curse and it is not “the useful difficulty that will save you.” It is the palace where the star’s growth edge is loud. You watch how that domain fricts. You do not cancel the domain.

If a page lists “Lu = wealth, Quan = power, Ke = fame, Ji = ruin,” close it. Those are posters. The transformation is a verb on a star in a room.

How They Overlay Palaces

A transformation does not float. It attaches to a star. The star already sits in a palace. The palace is a domain — Life, Career, Wealth, Spouse, and the rest of the twelve. So the readable unit is a triple:

this star + this mark + this room

“Hua Ji on the Sun” is incomplete. “Hua Ji on the Sun in the Career palace” is a sentence. “Hua Ji on the Sun in the Life Palace” is a different sentence. Same mark, same star, different domain. The Life-palace version colors how the person occupies a life. The Career-palace version colors the job-function. Do not import the Life sentence into a work question because Life is famous.

Brightness still matters. A star in temple and a star in fall do not take a mark at the same volume. See star brightness. Si Hua is weather. Brightness is how loud the furniture was before the weather arrived.

Natal Tint Versus Annual Weather

Two clocks, same four marks.

Birth-year Si Hua (生年四化) are a natal tint. The year stem of birth assigns Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji to four stars for the life of the chart. Those marks are part of the plate. A natal Hua Ji on a Wealth-palace star is a standing sore spot in the money domain — a texture, not a bankruptcy schedule.

Annual Si Hua (流年四化) are this year’s overlay. The current year’s stem assigns a new set of four. They sit on top of the natal plate. A year of Hua Lu on the same Wealth-palace star is a year when that standing room is easier to use. A year of Hua Ji on it is a year when the sore spot is the microphone.

Decade cycles (大限) can carry their own transformations in some schools. Learn natal and annual first. If an app dumps three sets of Si Hua on a first sitting, it is stacking. Stacking is how people decide the year is “impossible.”

Schools also disagree about which star takes which mark for a given stem — especially once auxiliary stars (Wen Chang, Wen Qu) enter the Ke lists. If two plates disagree, check the stem table and whether the software is using San He or Fei Xing conventions. Label the school. Do not average the marks.

One Worked Palace (Not a Reading)

Suppose Wu Qu (武曲, the martial-melody / accounts star) sits in the Career palace. The furniture is: work-as-standards, numbers, metered skill.

In a Jia year, a common San He table gives Wu Qu 化科. The sentence: the work room is the clarity room this year. Ordinary language: “This is a year when the job is easier to document and harder to do sloppily. I will pick the project that can be shown, not the one that can only be felt.”

In a Ren year, that table gives Wu Qu 化忌. The sentence: the work room is the sore spot this year. Ordinary language: “This is a year when the numbers and the standards will snag. I will not also reorganize the company. I will keep one ledger clean.”

Same star. Same palace. Opposite marks. Neither sentence says you will be promoted, fired, or told to learn a new stack. The next move is still yours: the actual boss, the actual budget, the actual Tuesday.

If Wu Qu were instead in the Life Palace, the Jia-year Ke would tint how you occupy a life toward legibility — a year when the self-room is easier to see. The Ren-year Ji would tint the self-room toward friction. Do not copy the Career ordinary-language sentence onto a life question. Change the domain, change the errand.

What Not to Do With Si Hua

Do not collect all four marks and write a horoscope paragraph. Read the one mark that lands in the palace of the question. If no transformation touches those rooms this year, say so. “This year’s Si Hua is not about this fork” is a complete answer.

Do not treat natal Ji as a defect to cure. It is a standing texture. The Whisper uses Life-palace quality plus the year’s four marks as two lenses. It does not walk twelve rooms. If you want the worked palace above, look at the plate. Grammar is not fate. It tells you which room is loud. You still choose the errand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the four transformations change my major stars? No. They mark stars that are already placed. The star remains. The mark is weather.

Is Hua Ji always the star to fear? No. It is the star whose palace is expensive this year (or in the natal tint). Watch that domain. Do not cancel it.

Why does my app’s Si Hua list disagree with a textbook? Different stem-to-star tables, or a school that transforms auxiliaries for Ke. Check inputs and the school label before you check your soul.

Should I read natal Si Hua or annual first? Natal tint first, so you know the standing rooms. Then one annual overlay. Not both plus the month on day one.

Where does this sit in a first read? After Life Palace, opposite palace, and the question-palace. Transformations are step five in the read-order guide.

Some patterns only appear when the reading becomes personal.
