The twelve palaces (十二宮) are the rooms of a Zi Wei Dou Shu plate. Every chart has the same twelve domains. What changes is which palace is Life — that starting room rotates with birth data — and which stars sit in which room.
This page is the room list. It is not a second set of Western houses with Chinese labels glued on. “Career palace” is not “tenth house Midheaven.” The court is a court. Read it as domains of a life, then put stars in the rooms that match the question.

The Fixed Cast of Rooms
Classical order around the plate (names vary slightly in English):
- Life / Self (命宮, mìnggōng) — how the person occupies a life; the first sentence of the chart
- Siblings (兄弟宮) — peers of a similar generation; allies; the sibling-function even if you are an only child
- Spouse (夫妻宮) — partnership, the one-to-one bond; not only legal marriage
- Children (子女宮) — children, students, work you parent, creative output in some readings
- Wealth (財帛宮) — money as pattern: how resources arrive and leave, not a salary forecast
- Health (疾厄宮) — body, illness metaphor, how crisis is inhabited
- Travel / Migration (遷移宮) — movement, the world outside the door, how leaving home feels
- Peers / Friends (交友宮, also 奴僕宮 in older labels) — networks, subordinates, the crowd you work with
- Career (官祿宮) — public work, rank, the job-function
- Property (田宅宮) — house, land, the stored base; not automatically real-estate profit
- Karma / Fortune / Spirit (福德宮) — inner store, leisure, the quality of private mind
- Parents (父母宮) — elders, bosses-as-parents, the authority you inherited
The Life Palace is calculated. The others follow in a fixed sequence from that start. Two people born the same year can have Life in different slots because month, day, and hour moved the pointer.
How to Use a Palace Without Turning It Into Fate
A palace is a domain. Stars in that domain describe a quality of engaging it. They do not book events.
Spouse palace with a sharp major star is not “you will divorce.” It is a description of how one-to-one bonds tend to feel in this system: direct, exposed, high-contrast, or whatever that star’s court job is. The marriage you actually have still has a lease, a temperament, and a year.
Wealth palace empty of majors is not “you will be poor.” It means the money story is told by other layers — minors, transformations, the Career and Property rooms, the luck cycles a practitioner may add later.
Health palace is the easiest room to abuse. Do not diagnose from it. If a reading makes you want a medical test, take the medical test because of symptoms, not because 疾厄宮 looked loud.
Life Palace Versus the Other Eleven
Beginners over-weight Life and then feel cheated when a work question lives in Career. Life is the self-room. It colors how every other room is occupied. It does not replace the other rooms.
A practical split:
- Who is walking in: Life, then Spirit (福德)
- Who they walk with: Spouse, Peers, Siblings, Parents
- What they walk toward: Career, Wealth, Children
- Where they walk from: Property, Travel
- What happens to the body on the walk: Health
If that sounds like a life, not a horoscope, that is the point. The plate is a map of domains. You still choose the next errand.
Palaces in Pairs
Read a room with its opposite. On the usual square:
- Life faces Travel
- Siblings faces Peers
- Spouse faces Career
- Children faces Property
- Wealth faces Spirit
- Health faces Parents
You do not need a full aspect doctrine to use the habit. “How I am” against “how the road meets me.” “The bond” against “the job.” “Money” against “the inner store.” When those two rooms disagree, the chart is describing a tension you can recognize in a week of ordinary life. When they agree, the chart is describing a rhyme, not a guarantee.
Decade cycles (大限) rotate a different palace into the “current life” seat for ten years. That is a later layer. Learn the natal rooms first or the moving pointer will feel like a slot machine.
Palaces Are Not Western Houses
A comparison table is tempting and usually sloppy.

Use Western houses if you already speak them — then put them down when you read this plate. Mixing vocabularies mid-sentence is how people decide the systems “contradict” when they were never answering the same question.

What The Whisper Uses
The Whisper takes the Life Palace major star (or the main pair) and the year’s four transformations. It does not narrate all twelve rooms every morning. That limit is honest. Twelve rooms times 108 names times transformations is a library. A daily synthesis is a lens.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the palaces move? The domains are fixed. The Life Palace starting point is calculated from birth data, so the labels sit on different physical squares for different people. Time cycles can overlay a second “current” palace. The natal rooms stay.
Which palace should I read for a relationship? Spouse first, then Peers and Life. Children palace if the question is about parenting the bond or the work you make together. Do not skip Spouse and read only Life because Life is famous.
What does “empty palace” mean? No major star in that room. The domain is still there. Look at minors, transformations, and the opposite palace. Do not pay to have it “cured.”
Is the Parents palace only about mother and father? Classically it includes elders and the authority function. A difficult Parents palace can describe a boss as easily as a parent. Read the actual elder in the room.
Can I read palaces without birth time? You can guess a Life Palace and be wrong. Hour moves the pointer. Unknown time: use BaZi day/month/year with a wide margin, or accept that Zi Wei is the wrong tool today.
