Daśāṃśa (daśāṃśa, दशांश), written D10, is the ten-fold varga. Each 30° rāśi is cut into ten slices of 3°. Where a planet or the Lagna falls inside that 3° slice decides its sign in the D10 map. Classical Jyotiṣa uses that map for karma in the public sense: work, status, the way effort shows up in the world.
It is a floor of the building, not a replacement for the ground floor. The rāśi chart (D1) still holds the bhāvas, the lords, and the dasha clock. D10 is a zoom on the work domain — the way Navāṃśa is a zoom on partnership and planetary dignity. People who open D10 first and hunt for a job title are using a microscope as a horoscope.
Parent varga: Navāṃśa. The rising sign D10 depends on: Lagna. Work as a room in D1: 10th bhāva in houses. Who signifies career regardless of house: karakas (Sun, Saturn, and Jaimini Amatyakaraka if you use that list).
Why Birth Time Is Not Optional Here
A D10 Lagna lives in a 3° window. The natal Lagna moves about 1° in four minutes. Three degrees is about twelve minutes of clock time. A birth time rounded to the hour can put D10 Lagna two or three signs away. Planets near a 3° boundary flip the same way.
If your time is “sometime in the morning,” you do not have a D10. Rectification that chases a job title through D10 Lagna is circular: you assume the job, then pick the time. Get the time, or keep D10 closed. D9 slices are 3°20′ — about thirteen minutes. Treat both vargas as “time known or stay quiet.”
How the Slice Is Assigned (Enough to Trust Software)
You do not need to compute D10 by hand. Odd and even signs start their ten-fold count from different rāśis in the usual Parāśara mapping; degree inside the natal sign picks the room. Two apps that disagree usually disagree on ayanāṃśa or birth-time conversion. If Mars is at 2°59′ in one ayanāṃśa and 3°01′ in another, D10 Mars can flip while D1 does not. Sidereal vs tropical still applies. A tropical “tenth harmonic” is a different object.
Read It With D1, in This Order
A usable first sitting:
- D1 10th house, 10th lord, and 10th-from-Moon. What is the public-work sentence in the natal wheel? Empty 10th means you read the lord. A 10th lord in the 6th is grind-and-service work; in the 11th, network-and-gain work. Write that sentence before you open D10.
- D1 karakas. Sun (authority, visibility), Saturn (the long job), Mercury (the trade), the 10th lord again. If you work in Jaimini, Amatyakaraka. These are the who. D10 does not replace them.
- D10 Lagna and Lagna lord. This is the temperament of the work-life, not the job title. A D10 Meṣa Lagna does not mean “soldier.” It means the public-effort chart starts in a Mars-ruled, initiating sign. Where that Lagna lord sits in D10 is the more useful note: in D10’s 10th, work is loud in the work room; in D10’s 12th, the career story includes absence, foreign desks, or work that does not photograph.
- D10 10th and its lord. Confirm or complicate the D1 10th. Agreement is a rhyme. Disagreement is a split: the life as lived (D1) versus the work-pattern at finer grain (D10). A D1 that looks like a public 10th and a D10 that looks private is a person whose job title and actual labor do not match the brochure. That is readable. It is not “the software is wrong.”
- Dasha of those planets. Vimshottari turns a house on. D10 does not time a promotion.
Shad bala on a work-significator can be a second-pass check. It is not a hiring report.
What D10 Is Not
It is not a job-title oracle. “D10 Lagna in Kanyā, therefore accountant” is sun-sign thinking pasted onto a varga. Kanyā can be craft, medicine, editing, logistics, or a person who keeps someone else’s books in a field that is not “Virgo.” The sign is a quality of attention. The industry is a life.
It is not a replacement for the 10th bhāva. Sometimes D10 adds texture. Sometimes it repeats D1 in a finer font. Repeating is allowed.
It is not independent of gochara. A loud D10 10th lord under Saturn in the 10th-from-Moon is a work-season, not a title dated to an ingress.
It is not a Western midheaven with Sanskrit. The MC is a tropical cusp in many files. D10 is a sidereal varga. You can study both. Do not paste a Placidus MC into a D10 Lagna box.
A Small Scene, Not a Forecast
Suppose D1 has the 10th lord in the 6th, and D10 has that same planet in its own sign in the D10 10th. The ground floor says: work lives in the grind room — clients, service, conflict you have to service. The tenth-fold says: at finer grain, that planet is dignified in the work room. A readable life: a job that looks like maintenance from the outside and like craft from the inside. You still do not know the industry. You know the shape of attention.
Reverse it — D1 10th lord in the 11th, D10 10th lord in the 8th — and the public story is gains while the varga says the labor involves other people’s resources. A shape. Not a bank in March.
The Whisper does not compute a full varga stack. Daily Vedic lines use natal rāśi quality and gochara. A practitioner who holds D1 and D10 together, and who refuses a job title from D10 Lagna alone, is doing this job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I read D10 if I only have a birth date? No. Twelve minutes moves the D10 Lagna. A date-only file has planets in D1 signs, not a career varga.
Is D10 more important after age 30? Some teachers weight vargas more as the life accumulates public karma. That is a pedagogical emphasis, not a switch that flips at a birthday. D1 remains the ground floor at every age.
What if D10 contradicts D1? Write both sentences. Public role versus finer work-pattern is a useful split. Do not pick the chart that flatters the résumé.
Does a weak planet in D10 ruin a career? A weak work-significator in D10 is a note about how that function operates at varga resolution. Combined with a strong D1 10th lord it can mean visible work that feels unsupported underneath. Combined with a weak D1 10th it is a rhyme. It is not unemployment.
Where next? The usual next varga: Navāṃśa. The D1 rooms: bhāvas. Strength numbers if you must: shad bala. The rising sign D10 inherits its time from: Lagna.
