What is a dasha is the idea: time is not uniform; chapters have planetary names. This page is the Vimshottari mechanism — the 120-year system most English apps mean when they say “your Saturn dasha.”
There are other dasha systems (Yogini, Ashtottari, Jaimini rāśi dashas). If software does not name the system, assume Vimshottari and verify. Do not treat a chapter length from one system as a fact in another.
Moon sign as the everyday handle: Chandra rāśi. The mansion that starts the clock: nakshatra. Sky weather on top of the chapter: gochara.
The 120-Year Order
Nine grahas, fixed lengths, fixed order:

The list is a loop, not a life sentence. You enter wherever the birth Moon’s nakshatra says, with a remainder, then walk the loop. Nobody lives a clean 120 from Ketu to Mercury unless they were born at the exact start of Ketu and lived to 120.
Nakshatra lordship follows the same nine in repeating groups of three: Aśvinī–Ketu, Bharaṇī–Venus, Kṛttikā–Sun, Rohiṇī–Moon, and so on through Revatī–Mercury.
Remaining Balance at Birth
This is the part forums skip and software hides behind a date.
Each nakshatra is 13°20′ (800 arcminutes). The Moon has already used some of that span at birth. The unused fraction of the nakshatra is the unused fraction of that lord’s mahadasha.
If the Moon has used 25% of a Venus-ruled nakshatra, 75% of the 20-year Venus mahadasha remains: 15 years of Venus from birth, then Sun, then Moon, and onward.
Two people with the same janma nakshatra can start with different remainders. “Ketu-born” is not a biography. It is a start-gun with a variable fuse.
You need a trustworthy sidereal Moon longitude. A wrong ayanāṃśa or a wrong birth time near a nakshatra edge moves both the lord and the remainder. See sidereal vs tropical.
Antardasha Nesting
Inside a mahadasha the same nine grahas run shorter chapters, starting with the mahadasha lord.
Venus–Venus, Venus–Sun, Venus–Moon … Venus–Mercury, then the mahadasha ends (or you die first; the table does not care).
Lengths are proportional: an antardasha lasts (mahadasha years × antardasha-lord years) / 120. Venus–Saturn is (20 × 19) / 120 ≈ 3 years 2 months. Sun–Sun is (6 × 6) / 120 = 0.3 years, a short room.
Pratyantardasha nests again the same way. Most useful work stops at mahadasha + antardasha. Finer than that, birth-time error eats the precision you think you bought.
How to Read a Period Without a Forecast
- Name the running pair: Saturn–Moon, not “Saturn dasha” as a blob.
- Look at those two grahas in the natal chart: houses, signs, dignity, whether they aspect or conjoin.
- Then look at gochara to those two. Jupiter’s yearly sign weather on the chapter: Jupiter gochara.
- Ask what domain is loud (the houses they rule and sit in). Do not ask the table for an event.
A Saturn mahadasha with Moon antardasha in a chart where Saturn rules the 10th and Moon sits in the 4th is a work-and-home sentence. It is not “you will move house in March.” The Whisper does not compute full dasha stacks; a practitioner who does is doing a different job.

Can two dasha systems run at once? Practitioners sometimes compare. Beginners should learn one clock. Mixing Yogini lengths into a Vimshottari sentence is how people get two appointments for the same Tuesday.
Does a “good” planet’s dasha guarantee ease? No. A well-placed Saturn dasha can be heavy and useful. A poorly placed Venus dasha can be expensive. Placement beats the brochure.
