Vedic Houses (Bhāvas): Twelve Life Domains From the Lagna

Bhāvas are the twelve houses of a Jyotiṣa chart, usually counted whole-sign from the Lagna. This guide names each domain, how house lordship works, and how not to import Western house cusps into a rāśi chart.

Bhāvas (bhāva, भाव) are the twelve life-domains of a Jyotiṣa chart. In the most common beginner method they are whole signs: the Lagna sign is house 1, the next sign is house 2, and so on. Planets in a sign are in that house. There is no 29° cusp argument on day one.

That is already a different geometry from many Western charts, which split a sign across two houses. If you paste Placidus houses onto a sidereal planet list, you have built a hybrid that no classical text signed.

Parent: what is Vedic. The starting sign: Lagna. The other common start: Moon sign. Who signifies what regardless of house: karakas.

The Twelve, in Workable English

  1. Tanu / Lagna — body, temperament as it meets the world, the chart’s “I”
  2. Dhana — accumulations, speech, family-of-origin resources
  3. Sahaja — siblings, effort, short skill, courage as a verb
  4. Sukha — home, mother, vehicles, the private floor
  5. Putra — children, intelligence, romance as play, the thing you author
  6. Ripu / Roga — debt, illness, conflict, the daily grind you must service
  7. Kāma / Kalatra — partnership, the other, open contracts. Mars here (and in a short traditional list of other houses) is the Manglik doṣa filter — a house rule, not relationship science.
  8. Āyu / Randhra — shared resources, rupture, research, the uncopied
  9. Dharma — luck-as-grace, teachers, long travel, the why
  10. Karma — public work, status, what the world thinks you do
  11. Lābha — gains, friends, the network that pays
  12. Vyaya — loss, sleep, exile, the room you leave

These are domains, not appointments. A full 7th house is not a wedding date. An empty 10th is not unemployment; the 10th still has a lord sitting somewhere.

Lords Matter More Than Furniture Catalogs

Each house has a lord: the planet that rules the rāśi on that house. The 10th lord in the 6th is a different work story from the 10th lord in the 11th. Beginners list planets-in-houses and skip lords. That is how you get “Sun in 10th = famous” while the 10th lord is combust in the 12th.

A first read-order:

  1. Lagna and Lagna lord
  2. Moon and 4th
  3. The house of the question and its lord
  4. The karaka of that question (Jupiter for children, Venus for partnership, and so on)
  5. Then yogas and dasha

Dusthānas (6, 8, 12) are difficult rooms by category. Planets there are not automatically ruined; they are doing hard-room work. Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikona (1, 5, 9) are strength rooms by category. Categories are not destinies.

Two House Wheels

From Lagna: the life as lived in a body.

From Moon (Chandra lagna): the life as felt. Gochara often uses this wheel.

From Sūrya lagna (Sun as 1): a third, less common beginner wheel.

If Lagna-10th says career and Moon-10th says something else, you have a public/private split, not a broken app. Write both sentences.

Bhāva chalita (house-cusp) systems exist in later practice. Learn whole-sign first or you will argue with software about 2° for the rest of the year.

Houses Are Not Western Houses With Better Spices

A lazy table (2nd = money, 7th = marriage, 10th = career) looks similar because both traditions inherited a Hellenistic-adjacent domain list and then lived different centuries. The slip is in cusps, in karakas, in dasha activation, and in the fact that Jyotiṣa will also read the same question from a divisional chart (D9 for marriage, D10 for work). Natal D1 houses are the ground floor, not the whole building. Navāṃśa is the usual next floor.

Zi Wei palaces are a different architecture entirely. Do not translate 官祿宮 into 10th bhāva and call it a synthesis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need birth time for houses? Yes. Without time you have planets in signs, not a Lagna wheel. Moon-as-1 is a workaround, not a full house chart.

Why does my Western 10th house planet sit in the Vedic 9th? Zodiac offset plus house system. Convert the zodiac first, then decide whether you are using whole sign.

Is an empty house weak? Empty means you read the lord. The domain is still there.

What is a house cusp in Jyotiṣa? In whole sign, the sign is the house. Cusps matter in bhāva-chalita variants. Ask which system the astrologer is using.

Where next? Lagna: rising sign. Significators: karakas. Timing that turns a house on: dasha.
