A karaka (kāraka, कारक) is a significator: the planet that stands for a topic or a person in the chart. The 4th house is a room for home. The Moon is a karaka for mind and mother. You read the room and the significator. Forums pick one and call it a method.
Jyotiṣa uses more than one karaka list. If you only know Atmakaraka, you know one Jaimini letter. This page is the three-list map.
Parent: what is Vedic. Rooms: bhāvas. Combinations that can involve these planets: yogas.
1. Naisargika: Natural Significators
These do not change with the chart. They are the brochure of the solar system in this tradition:
- Sun — soul, father, authority, government, the visible self
- Moon — mind, mother, body fluids, public, the daily mind-weather
- Mars — siblings, courage, conflict, property-as-effort, blood
- Mercury — speech, trade, friends-as-wits, learning
- Jupiter — children, teachers, wisdom, wealth-as-grace, husband in some classical lists
- Venus — partnership, vehicles, luxury, wife in some classical lists, the arts
- Saturn — longevity, servants, delay, the old, sorrow-as-structure
- Rahu — foreigners, sudden amplification, the uncharted
- Ketu — mokṣa-language, isolation, the leftover expertise
When someone says “Jupiter is children,” they mean this list. A weak Jupiter does not cancel the 5th house. It means the natural child-significator needs the 5th lord and the dasha to finish the sentence.
Gendered spouse-karakas in old manuals (Venus/Jupiter by sex of native) are historical rules. Use them as optional color. Do not run a marriage verdict off a brochure.
2. Sthira: Fixed Karakas by Degree
A less-quoted Parāśara list assigns fixed topics to the planet with the highest degree in certain ways (different textbooks, different tables). You will see “sthira karaka for father / mother / siblings” in advanced notes.
If your software does not label sthira karakas, you are not missing your personality. You are missing a specialist layer. Learn naisargika and houses first.
3. Chara: Jaimini Movable Karakas
Jaimini ranks the seven (sometimes eight, with Rahu) natal planets by degree inside their sign, highest to lowest:
| Rank | Name | Usual topic |
|---|---|---|
| Highest degree | Atmakaraka (AK) | self / “soul” theme |
| 2 | Amatyakaraka (AmK) | career / counselors |
| 3 | Bhratrikaraka (BK) | siblings / courage people |
| 4 | Matrikaraka (MK) | mother / home-people |
| 5 | Putrakaraka (PK) | children / students |
| 6 | Gnatikaraka (GK) | rivals / the 6th-function |
| 7 | Darakaraka (DK) | partner |
This is the list the Atmakaraka page belongs to. AK is one rank, not the whole of Jyotiṣa. Darakaraka is not “your soulmate’s sun sign.” It is the planet that currently holds the partner-function in this ranking.
Ties and Rahu-inclusion rules differ by school. Two apps can name two AKs. Ask whether they include Rahu and how they break ties.
How to Use Karakas Without a Slogan
For a question (“work,” “a parent,” “a partnership”):
- House and house lord (bhāvas)
- Natural karaka
- Chara karaka if you work in Jaimini
- Dasha of those planets
- The actual person in the room
If four of five agree, you have a rhyme. If they argue, you have a chart, not a broken cosmos. Do not pick the karaka that tells the story you wanted.
The Whisper does not output a full Jaimini karaka stack. It uses natal rāśi quality and gochara. A practitioner who lives in Jaimini is doing a different job — a useful one, if they can show the ranking.
A Partnership Question as a Test
Ask “how does this chart talk about partnership?” and refuse a single-planet answer.
- 7th house and 7th lord (and 2nd/8th if you read the marriage axis)
- Venus as naisargika karaka (and Jupiter if you use the old gendered list)
- Darakaraka if you are in Jaimini
- Venus or DK dasha / antardasha
- The person, the contract, the year you are actually in
If Venus is strong, the 7th lord is in the 12th, and DK is Saturn, the chart is allowed to say two things at once: taste for bond, a partnership that lives in absence or foreignness, a partner-function that feels like work. That is a readable tension. It is not a reason to pick the karaka you like.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Atmakaraka the same as the Sun? Only if the Sun has the highest degree in its sign among the planets used. Often it is not the Sun.
Which list should I learn first? Naisargika (this brochure) plus houses. Then dasha. Then chara if you like Jaimini.
Can karakas replace houses? No. They are the who to the house’s where. Venus in the 12th as Darakaraka is a different partnership sentence from Venus in the 7th as Darakaraka.
Why does my AK change when I add Rahu? Because the ranking set changed. Pick a school and stay there for one chart.
Where next? The one famous chara: Atmakaraka. Rooms: bhāvas. Combinations: yogas.
