Numerology is a family of methods that turn dates and names into small integers and then read those integers as functions: a path, a style of expression, a private want. The most common Western form is Pythagorean: letters A–I map to 1–9, and dates are reduced by adding digits until a single digit — or a master number — remains.
It is simple on purpose. That simplicity is the appeal and the hazard. A Life Path 7 is easy to remember and easy to overfit. The math is not mysterious. Whether the resulting label is useful is a different question from whether it is caused by the number. The Core Numbers
Life Path. From the full birth date. The most public number: the recurring themes of a life. Calculation: how to calculate Life Path.
Expression (Destiny). From the full name at birth, using letter values. How the life is put into the world. Guide: Expression number.
Soul Urge (Heart’s Desire). From the vowels of the name. What you keep wanting when nobody is scoring you. Guide: Soul Urge.
Personality. From the consonants. The interface other people meet first. Guide: Personality number.
Birthday. From the day of the month only (1–31, then reduced or kept). A smaller, specific tool. Guide: Birthday number.

Pythagorean, Chaldean, and Indian
Pythagorean is the 1–9 grid most English apps use. Master numbers 11, 22, 33 are usually not reduced. See master numbers.
Chaldean uses a different letter-to-number map and often treats 9 specially. It is not a drop-in replacement. If two apps disagree, check which map they used before you invent a spiritual crisis.

Gematria is a separate historical method for Hebrew (and later other) texts. Do not paste Life Path essays onto a gematria total.
How to Use a Number Without Becoming It
Write the calculation. Write one ordinary-language sentence. Compare the sentence to a real week. Keep the mismatches.
A Life Path does not excuse cruelty or guarantee leadership. Compatibility tables do not decide a relationship; they can start a question. See numerology compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is numerology the same as astrology? No. Astrology uses sky positions. Numerology uses arithmetic on dates and names. They can be stacked; they are not the same clock.
Do I use the name on my certificate? For Expression/Soul Urge, the birth name is the usual input. Later names are sometimes read as a current overlay. Say which one you used.
What are karmic debt numbers? A later overlay (13, 14, 16, 19). Optional. Guide: karmic debt numbers.
Can the numbers predict events? Not in any demonstrated sense. They can name a preference. Prediction is a different claim.
