A Life Path number is the digit (or master number) you get by reducing your full birth date. It is the most-searched numerology calculation and the easiest to get slightly wrong. Two addition styles circulate. Apps disagree. This page is the method so you can check the machine by hand.
System definition: what is numerology. Meanings of each path live on their own pages, starting with Life Path 1.
The Method We Use Here
Write the date as YYYY-MM-DD or in your local order, but add year, month, and day as three separate totals, reduce each, then add those three results.
Example: 14 March 1990.
- Month: 3 β 3
- Day: 14 β 1+4 = 5
- Year: 1+9+9+0 = 19 β 1+9 = 10 β 1+0 = 1
- 3 + 5 + 1 = 9 β Life Path 9
Keep 11, 22, and 33 if they appear as a final or as a reduced month/day/year total that you then add β see the master-number section. Do not reduce 29 to 11 unless you are using a system that treats 29 that way; standard Pythagorean reduces 29 to 11 only if you are adding 2+9 and choosing to stop. Be consistent.
Worked Examples
8 July 1975
- Month 7
- Day 8
- Year 1+9+7+5 = 22 (stop: master 22)
- 7+8+22 = 37 β 3+7 = 10 β 1 β Life Path 1
- Alternative house style: some readers keep the 22 in view as a βsubβ and still reduce the total. The Life Path is still 1. The 22 is a note, not a second Life Path.
29 November 1983
- Month 11 (master; you may keep 11 or reduce to 2)
- Day 29 β 11 (or 2)
- Year 1+9+8+3 = 21 β 3
- If you keep masters: 11+11+3 = 25 β 7 β Life Path 7
- If you reduce early: 2+2+3 = 7 β same 7
When the two styles disagree, they usually disagree on whether someone is 11/2 or 2, 22/4 or 4. See master numbers. Pick a style and stay with it when you compare two people.
11 January 2000
- Month 1
- Day 11
- Year 2 β 2
- 1+11+2 = 14 β 5 β Life Path 5
Common Mistakes
- Adding the whole date as one long string (1+4+0+3+1+9+9+0) can match, and sometimes does not if you treat leading zeros or written formats differently. Prefer three-part reduction.
- Using the local calendarβs written month name as a number you invented. March is 3.
- Mixing Chaldean letter rules into a date. Dates do not use letter maps.
- Taking a websiteβs answer without checking time zone. Dates do not need a time. If you were born near midnight, the calendar date is a civic fact, not a natal hour.
Birthday number uses only the day. Do not confuse it with Life Path.
After You Have the Number
Read the matching Life Path page. Then write one sentence in your own words. Then look at Expression if you want a second axis. Compatibility is a later step: numerology compatibility. How the numbers sit together: how to read a numerology chart. Life Path plus Expression, later in life: maturity number.
The arithmetic is not a proof of character. It is a recipe. The science caveat is numerology and math.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there one correct method? There is a consistent Pythagorean method. There is not a global court of numerology. Consistency beats purity.
What if I was born on February 29? Use 29 as the day, then reduce (11 or 2) as your style requires. The year is still the year.
Do I need a birth time? No.
Why does an app say Iβm 11 and this page says 2? Master-number policy. Read both pages. Do not run a third calculator until you know the rule.
