Rahu and Ketu are the north and south lunar nodes: the points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path. They are why eclipses happen. In Jyotiṣa they are grahas — influencers — without disks. They do not rule a rāśi the way Mars rules Meṣa. They occupy signs, they aspect in the tradition’s node way, and they run long dashas.
English internet copy treats Rahu as a demon of desire and Ketu as a monk with a scissors. The myth (the asura who drank the nectar and was cut in two) is a teaching story about appetite and leftover. It is not a criminal record.
Parent: what is Vedic. Chapter lengths: Vimshottari. The 18-year and 7-year chapters as chapters: Rahu mahadasha, Ketu mahadasha.
An Axis, Not Two Unrelated Villains
Rahu and Ketu sit 180° apart. Where Rahu is, Ketu is opposite. You do not get “Rahu in the 10th” without “Ketu in the 4th” (in a whole-sign house count). Read the axis.
A common teaching:
- Rahu: the unfamiliar hunger — amplification, foreignness, the thing you overdo to get into the room
- Ketu: the already-known leftover — release, expertise that bores you, the thing you can do without a brochure
Those are polarities of attention, not good/evil. A 10th-house Rahu / 4th-house Ketu axis is a chart that may over-invest public work and under-notice home. The opposite axis reverses the spotlight. Neither axis books a scandal.
Sign matters. Rahu in a Mercury sign talks differently from Rahu in a Saturn sign. Conjunctions matter more than memes: Rahu with the Moon is a different mind-weather than Rahu with Saturn.
Nodes Are Not Western “North Node Purpose” Stickers
Western evolutionary copy often treats the north node as a homework assignment and the south node as a past-life comfort zone. Jyotiṣa can rhyme with that, especially in modern teaching. Classical use is wider: nodes as eclipse points, as karakas of foreigners and suddenness, as dasha lords, as spoilers or amplifiers of the planets they touch.
If you already speak Western nodes, keep the rhyme and drop the self-help slogan. The Vedic node is not a TED Talk.
Dasha Versus Natal Placement
Natal Rahu/Ketu: the axis you always have.
Rahu mahadasha (18 years) / Ketu mahadasha (7 years): a long chapter when that end of the axis is the name of the time. See the dedicated mahadasha pages for chapter flavor. This page is the furniture those chapters walk through.
Gochara of the nodes: the axis sliding through signs, about eighteen months each. An eclipse on a natal planet is gochara plus a sky event. It is a loud week for that planet’s houses. It is not a verdict.
How to Read Your Nodes Without a Horror Blog
- Name the two houses (from Lagna and from Moon if you can).
- Name the two signs.
- Name any planet within a few degrees (conjunction is the loud modifier).
- Ask which end of the axis your current dasha is amplifying.
- Look at the actual appetite and the actual leftover in the last year. If the chart and the life disagree, trust the life and re-check the ayanāṃśa.
Remedies aimed at nodes are a market. Read vedic remedies before you buy a stone because a reel said Rahu was “activated.”
Eclipses on the Axis
Because the nodes are the eclipse points, a solar or lunar eclipse near your natal Rahu/Ketu or near a natal planet on that axis is a named gochara event. It lasts days, not an 18-year dasha. Treat it as a week when that house-pair is loud. Sleep, news, and a sudden plan belong to the week. They do not prove the myth.
If your natal Rahu sits on the 10th/4th axis, an eclipse there is a work-and-home week. Write down what actually happened. That notebook is worth more than a “eclipse portal” caption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Rahu and Ketu planets? In Jyotiṣa they are grahas. In astronomy they are orbital nodes. Both sentences can be true in their rooms.
Do they retrograde? They move backward against the signs by definition (mean-node convention in most software). “Rahu retrograde” as a special headline is usually just Rahu.
Is Rahu always malefic? The tradition classes the nodes as shadowy / challenging. Charts still use them. An 18-year Rahu chapter can build a career in a foreign field. “Malefic” is a category, not a curse.
Why do two apps put Rahu in different signs? Mean vs true node, ayanāṃśa, or a house-system difference (sign vs bhāva). Check those three before you split the myth in half again.
Where next? Chapters: Rahu dasha, Ketu dasha. Houses: bhavas. Sky: gochara.
