Chandra Lagna: Houses From the Moon, Distinct From the Moon Sign

Chandra Lagna is the practice of treating the natal Moon's sign as house 1 and reading the twelve bhāvas from there. It is not the same page as Chandra rāśi (the Moon sign itself). This guide covers when the second wheel helps — including when birth time is missing.

Chandra Lagna is a method: take the sign the Moon occupies and call it the 1st house. The next sign is the 2nd, and so on around the wheel. You are reading the twelve bhāvas from the mind-sign instead of from the rising sign.

It is not another name for the Moon sign. The Moon sign — Chandra rāśi — is a placement: which rāśi the Moon was in at birth. Chandra Lagna is what you do with that placement when you want a house wheel and the Lagna is missing, disputed, or already used. The rāśi page is the handle. This page is the second lagna.

Parent: Vedic Moon sign. The body-and-life wheel this sits beside: Lagna. The transit work that often uses this count: gochara.

Two Lagnas, Two Jobs

Lagna (udaya lagna) is the sign on the eastern horizon. It needs a time and a place. It structures the life as lived in a body: appearance-as-approach, the house lords, functional benefic/malefic roles. Without time, you do not have it.

Chandra Lagna is the Moon’s sign used as 1. It needs the Moon’s rāśi. Time still matters if the Moon is near a sign edge — the Moon changes rāśi about every two and a half days — but a six-hour unknown window that leaves the Moon mid-sign still gives you a Moon-as-1 wheel. A six-hour window never gives you a trustworthy rising sign. That is the practical reason this method exists.

The jobs stay different even when you have both. Lagna-10th is the public-work room of the body-chart. Moon-10th is the work room of the felt-chart: what occupation feels like, what the mind treats as “what I do.” They rhyme in some lives and split in others. A split is information — a public role that does not match the inner job description — not a broken calculator.

Some texts also run a Sūrya Lagna (houses from the Sun). That is a third wheel, less used on a first pass. Learn Lagna and Chandra Lagna before you collect sun-as-1 essays.

When the Second Wheel Helps

Unknown or rounded birth time. You can still name Chandra rāśi if the Moon is not on a cusp. From that sign you can ask: where is Saturn from the Moon? Where is the 7th-from-Moon? Where is the 10th-from-Moon? Those are real sentences. They are not a full chart. They will not give you functional lordship from Lagna. They will give you a felt-house map, which is more than a sun-sign column.

Gochara. Vedic transit counting classically starts from the natal Moon. Sade Sati is the famous case: Saturn in the 12th, 1st, and 2nd from Chandra. Jupiter gochara uses the same from-Moon houses. If you only ever read transits from a tropical ascendant, you are in a different classroom.

Mind-and-habit questions. “How does this person experience home, partnership, work?” can be asked from Chandra Lagna even when Lagna is known. The Moon is manas. Houses from the Moon describe where the mind puts those domains. A 4th-from-Moon piled with malefics can be a private floor that feels like work, while the Lagna-4th is quiet. Write both.

Matching filters that count from the Moon. Manglik lists often check Mars from Lagna and from Chandra. Same method, even when the filter is being misused.

When It Does Not Replace Lagna

It does not give you the Lagna lord. Functional benefic and malefic roles — Saturn helpful for one rising, heavy for another — are Lagna math. Moon-as-1 will not tell you whether Saturn rules the 9th and 10th or the 7th and 8th in your body-chart.

It does not give you a D9 or D10 Lagna. Vargas inherit their rising signs from the natal degree of the horizon. No time, no varga Lagna. Do not invent a noon rising, then a D10, then a career title. The honest remainder is Moon sign plus planets-in-signs plus, if the Moon is mid-rāśi, houses-from-Moon.

It does not change the dasha start. Vimshottari starts from the Moon’s nakshatra, a finer slice than the rāśi. Houses-from-Moon and the dasha pointer are neighbors, not twins. See science of nakshatra astrology.

How to Cast It Without Building a Hybrid

  1. Fix sidereal Moon sign. Lahiri is the common default; name whatever you use.
  2. Draw twelve whole signs with that rāśi as 1.
  3. Drop natal planets into those signs. The sign a planet occupies does not change. Its house number does.
  4. Optionally repeat from Lagna on a second sketch. Do not average the two house numbers. “Saturn is in the 3rd from Lagna and the 8th from Moon” is the sentence. “Saturn is in the 5.5th” is not.

Whole sign is the beginner geometry, same as D1 houses in this library. If you then paste Placidus cusps onto a Moon-as-1 wheel, you have built a third object. Say so if you do it. Most classical Chandra Lagna talk is sign = house.

Dignity does not change when the house numbers change. Mars in Makara is still exalted Mars. What changes is the room that exaltation is sitting in, from the Moon’s door.

A Worked Contrast, Still Not a Chart Dump

Natal Moon in sidereal Karkaṭa, Saturn in Tulā, Jupiter in Makara. From Chandra Lagna: Saturn is in the 4th, Jupiter in the 7th — Saturn on the private floor, Jupiter on the other-axis.

Suppose Lagna is Meṣa. From Lagna, Saturn in Tulā is the 7th, Jupiter in Makara the 10th — Saturn on the contract room, Jupiter on public work.

Same planets, two sentences. A career that looks Jupiter-loud and a home life that feels Saturn-loud. You do not pick a winner. You stop asking which wheel is “real.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Chandra Lagna the same as Chandra rāśi? No. Rāśi is the Moon’s sign. Chandra Lagna is houses counted from that sign. The Moon sign page is the first; this page is the second.

Can I use a tropical Moon as Chandra Lagna? You can, if you label it tropical. Every classical table you then apply (Sade Sati, from-Moon gochara, Manglik-from-Moon) was built on sidereal signs. Convert once. Sidereal vs tropical.

Which wheel should I read first? If you have time: Lagna for structure, Moon for mind and for gochara. If you do not have time: Moon sign, then houses-from-Moon, and stay quiet about Lagna lords and vargas.

Does Chandra Lagna change during the day? The natal Moon sign does not. Transiting Moon through the natal Chandra-Lagna wheel is daily mind-weather. That is gochara of the Moon, not a new natal lagna.

Where next? The handle: Chandra rāśi. The other 1: Lagna. Transit counting: gochara. The famous from-Moon Saturn: Sade Sati.
