The useful annual question in Nine Star Ki is not “what is my new number?” Your Life Star does not change. The question is which palace that number is sitting in from this Lichun to the next.
This page is the method for any year — not a 2026 forecast. Ready-made map: 2026 annual guide. Palace glossary: monthly stars. Parent: what Nine Star Ki is. Life Star first: calculation.
Step 1 — Name the Year’s Center Star
The Nine Star Ki year begins at Lichun (usually February 4), not January 1. The year star is the number that flies to the center of the Lo Shu for everyone.
A pencil method that matches the 2026 guide’s claim (1 Water in the center for the 2026 solar year):
- Add the digits of the Gregorian year until you have 1–9.
- Subtract that digit from 11.
- If you get 10, the center star is 1. If you get 11, treat it as 2.
Checks:
- 2026 → 10 → 1; 11 − 1 = 10 → 1 in the center.
- 2025 → 9; 11 − 9 = 2.
- 2024 → 8; 11 − 8 = 3.
- 2017 → 10 → 1; 11 − 1 = 10 → 1.
The sequence runs backward: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 9… A year whose center is 5 is a civic “center year.” That is not yet your sitting.
If a Japanese almanac and this fold disagree, the almanac wins for that tradition. Write the source on the page. Gender does not change the year star; it may have changed your Life Star.
Step 2 — Place Your Life Star Relative to the Center
When the year star equals your Life Star, you sit in the center (palace 5) that year. A 3 Wood person is in palace 5 in a year whose center is 3. A 1 Water person is in palace 5 in a 1-center year (2026 is the worked case on the year-map page).
That single rule gives you the expensive year immediately. You do not need a full grid to know you are “visiting 5.”
To find the other eight sittings, use a published flying-star grid for that center number, or count from a known year. The stars move together, one retrograde step per year. From a known map (2026, center 1) you can walk forward or backward:
| Life Star | Palace in a 1-center year |
|---|---|
| 1 | Center (5) |
| 2 | Northwest (6) |
| 3 | West (7) |
| 4 | Northeast (8) |
| 5 | North (1) |
| 6 | Southwest (2) |
| 7 | East (3) |
| 8 | Southeast (4) |
| 9 | South (9) |
That table is a calibration, not a second 2026 essay. For 2027 (center 9, if the backward sequence holds), each Life Star moves one step in the flying order. For 2025 (center 2), it has not yet reached the 2026 sitting.
You can also memorize the home palace of each number (1 North, 2 SW, 3 East, 4 SE, 5 Center, 6 NW, 7 West, 8 NE, 9 South). The year you sit in that home cell is a house of origin year — a different article, because “at home” is not the same skill as “find the sitting.”
If your school flies on a different grid, keep the school. The method is: center star, then offset, then palace name. Do not invent a new Life Star each January.
Step 3 — Read the Sitting as Weather, Not Plot
Palace language is seasonal. East and Southeast lean start and talk. South leans visibility. West and Northwest lean harvest and authority. Southwest leans support. North and Northeast lean inward work and delay. Center leans intensity. The longer glossary is on the monthly-stars page; do not paste it here.
Two people occupy different palaces in the same civic year. “2026 is a quiet year” is only true as a center-star sentence. It is false as a person sentence: a 7 in the East that year is not in a quiet sitting. Month visitors then modify the sitting. Same flying idea, smaller clock.
Visiting 5 Without Panic
Palace 5 is the cell people screenshot. Classical notes call it heavy: stakes up, mistakes louder, outcomes less neutral. Modern internet copy turns that into a curse year — cancel the wedding, freeze the company, wait.
A cleaner translation: reduce the number of simultaneous bets.
The center amplifies whatever you already pointed at. If you point at five projects, you get five expensive lessons. If you point at one, you get a loud year about that one. The palace does not choose the content. You do. The fixed-path essay is the longer argument that a sitting is a rhythm, not a script.
Life Star 5 people sit in the center every ninth year as a home sitting, which is why their center years are odd: familiar and loud at once. Other numbers visit 5 as guests. Guests should not redecorate the house (or the org chart) in every room.
In a 5-sitting year: write the one decision the year is actually about; shrink the others; mark the month when the visitor also hits 5; use directions lightly (the center has no home wall). Refuse “nothing good can happen.” Loud years still contain good work. They cost more attention.
Do not wait three years for a prettier palace. If the wait has a date, it is planning. If it does not, it is the fatalism the decision page exists to interrupt.
Worked Method, Not a Reading
A 4 Wood Life Star (gender-neutral, birthday after Lichun) wants 2028: 2+0+2+8=12→3; 11−3=8 in the center. You are not in palace 5. From the 2026 calibration (center 1, 4 sits Northeast), walk the flying steps to an 8-center year, or open that year’s grid from the same school. Read the palace as this year’s shape. Stop.
If a partner is a 7, walk 7 separately. Compatibility is two sittings. The Whisper will do the current year from your birth date. The pencil step is how you notice an app that skipped Lichun.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my Life Star change every year? No. The palace changes. The number does not.
Is the year star the same as my annual palace? No. Year star is the civic number in the center. Annual palace is where your number sits.
Is visiting 5 unlucky? It is expensive. Unlucky is a slogan. Cost is a planning word. For 2026 without the walk: Nine Star Ki 2026.
How is this different from house of origin? House of origin is the year you sit in your own palace. This page is how to find whichever palace you are in.
