A 3 Wood Life Star and a 7 Metal Life Star sit across a kitchen table and try to plan a move. Three wants a date and a van by Thursday. Seven wants the leaving party to be good and the landlord conversation to stay warm. Metal cuts Wood in the five-element cycle. That sentence is a weather note, not a marriage veto.
Nine Star Ki compatibility is two natal Life Stars plus where each star is sitting this year (and this month, if you have the patience). It will not tell you whether to stay. It can tell you which seasons the same argument gets louder.
If you do not yet have the numbers, start with how to calculate and the Life Star portraits. This page will not reprint those nine essays. Parent: what Nine Star Ki is.
What a Pair Actually Contains
A useful pair reading has four moving parts, not one score.
1. Natal Life Star × natal Life Star. The elemental relationship (feed, control, same element) describes a habitual friction or ease. 3 and 7 are a control pair: Metal prunes Wood. 1 Water and 3 Wood are a feed pair: Water supports Wood’s starts. Two Earths (2, 5, 8) share a tempo and can stall in the same ditch.
2. House position × house position. Each person’s Life Star occupies a palace this year. A 3 who is sitting in the East (a start-friendly palace) next to a 7 who is sitting in the Mountain (a slow, inward palace) is a different household than the same two numbers both visiting the West. The natal pair did not change. The year did.
3. Month as a scheduler. The monthly visitor is where you put the hard conversation, not where you decide the relationship’s worth. A tense natal pair can still pick a month that favors listening, or a month that favors a clean cut.
4. Character Stars, if you have them. The inner number explains why someone “doesn’t act like their Life Star” at home. A public 3 with a Character 6 may already be running an inner standards committee. That changes how the 7’s polish lands. See character star.
What is not in the list: a percentage, a “karmic lesson,” or a rule that control pairs should not raise children. Those are exports from other products.
The 3 Wood / 7 Metal Case
Hold the pair as a scheduling problem.
3 Thunder / Wood initiates. The gift is a start other people were still describing. The cost is maintenance.
7 Lake / Metal socializes and harvests. The gift is a livable room and a less ugly goodbye. The cost is sanding: polish as a way not to have the blunt talk.
Three proposes the move as a beginning. Seven hears a threat to a social fabric that is still paying rent. The slogan — Metal cuts Wood — means one person’s tool is the other person’s wound if you never name the job.
Now move them through houses.
In a year when 3 sits East and 7 sits West, split labor on purpose: Three owns the lease-break; Seven owns the farewell and the first dinner that makes the kitchen real. That is compatibility use, not harmony. When both visit demanding palaces — center for one, Mountain for the other — shrink the project or buy time without calling it fate. The fixed-path essay is the longer argument against treating a palace as a script.
A month when both visitors amplify the natal habits is a good month to use the difference (launch plus host) and a bad month to litigate whose style is the adult one. Metal/Wood friction has a calendar. It does not have a verdict.
How Not to Read a Table
English internet tables often color nine-by-nine cells green and red. Three problems.
They freeze the natal pair and ignore houses. A green cell in a center-palace year for both people is not the same year as the green cell in two house-of-origin years. See house of origin for what “at home” does to a person — including the temptation to treat comfort as proof the other person should adapt.
They inherit the gendered calculation split without saying so. Unlabeled inputs make the pair reading fiction.
They turn five-element cycles into moral rank. “Metal controls Wood, so 7 should lead” is a power grab. Control can mean pruning or shutting down. You still choose which.
A cleaner table has three marks: feeds, controls, same. Then one sentence about this year’s palaces. Then stop.
Work, Friendship, and a Small Protocol
The same pair language works in an office. A 3 founder and a 7 client-lead will fight about shipping versus staging. Schedule demos in 7-friendly months and commits in 3-friendly ones. Friendship pairs that look “easy” on a feed cycle still fail when both people hit a quiet palace and neither books the ticket. Ease is not effort.
If you also keep a BaZi chart, do not merge the outputs. BaZi is constitution and decade weather. Nine Star Ki is a nine-palace year. Comparison: Nine Star Ki vs BaZi.
- Write both Life Stars and the school that produced them.
- Write this year’s palace for each — yearly palace method.
- Name the elemental relation in one word: feed, control, or same.
- Pick one upcoming decision. Assign it to a month that does not punish the person who has to do the visible part.
- Refuse a verdict. If you needed a verdict, you needed a conversation, not a square.
The Whisper can surface both palaces if both profiles are present. It will not score the marriage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Nine Star Ki tell me if we should marry? No. It can describe a habitual friction and a year that makes that friction expensive. The decision stays human.
Is a control pair bad? No. It is a pair that needs an editor and a starter, or a host and a spark. Unnamed, it feels like contempt. Named, it is labor.
What if our calculators disagree? Stop the pair reading until you share a method. See calculation.
Should we wait for a better year? Only if the wait has a date and a reason. Open-ended delay is how palace language becomes an excuse. Decision use is the counter-protocol.
