Every ninth year, if the flying is regular, your Life Star spends the Lichun-to-Lichun stretch in the palace that already bears its number. 9 sits South. 3 sits East. 1 sits North. 5 sits in the center as a resident, not a guest. Japanese practice calls this remaining in the house of origin — a honmei (本命) year in the narrow sense: not just “having a honmei star,” which you always do, but sitting at home.
That year is easy to mythologize. People call it lucky, authentic, a reset, a promised harvest. It is none of those as a guarantee. It is a year whose weather rhymes with the number you already know how to be. Familiar is not the same as fortunate. Comfort is not the same as a verdict.
This page is about that specific sitting. How to find any sitting is the yearly palace method. Do not collapse the two. Parent: what Nine Star Ki is.
What “At Home” Is on the Map
Fixed Lo Shu homes:
| Life Star | Home palace | Everyday tone of that room |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Water | North | depth, privacy, slow work |
| 2 Earth | Southwest | support, caretaking, bonds |
| 3 Wood | East | starts, push, visible motion |
| 4 Wood | Southeast | talk, teaching, gradual growth |
| 5 Earth | Center | intensity from the middle |
| 6 Metal | Northwest | line-holding, authority, distance |
| 7 Metal | West | harvest, hosting, polish |
| 8 Earth | Northeast | delay, stored work, sudden shifts |
| 9 Fire | South | visibility, heat, being seen |
In a house-of-origin year the civic flying chart has placed your number back on that cell. You are not a tourist in the Mountain or a guest in the Lake. You are in the room the textbooks already used to describe you.
How you get there is ordinary method: center star of the year, then offset, same as any other year. The 2026 map happens to put 9 Fire at home in the South; that is a fact about 2026, not this article’s forecast. Other numbers are at home in other years. If you do not yet have the Life Star, calculate it with a named school. A gendered table can move which year is home, because it can move the number.
What the Year Tends to Feel Like (Without a Verdict)
The honest phenomenological list, gathered from how people use the language — not from a claim that the calendar causes a life:
Less translation. In a foreign palace you spend attention converting: “I am a 7, but this is a North year, so I should want quiet.” At home the conversion drops. The 7 wants the party and the year does not argue. That can be a relief. It can also be a lack of friction you had been using as a conscience.
Easier defaults, lazier edits. The habits that already match the star get cheaper. A 3 at home starts things with less apology. An 8 at home waits with less shame. The growth edge named on the Life Star page does not vanish; it loses its annual excuse. If your edge is rigidity (6) or scattered starts (3), home years are when that edge looks like “just being me.”
Recognition that is really familiarity. Other people may find you “more yourself.” Do not take a good review as proof you should never sit in the Mountain again.
A temptation to nest. Sitting at home is not a reason to move walls — Nine Star Ki and feng shui. Directions may feel obvious; they are still optional.
For Life Star 5, home is the loud room. Five’s house of origin is the center. Native intensity, not a spa year. Residents still pick one bet.
The sitting names the shape of the load, not the outcome. A 9 at home in a public failure is still on stage. The philosophy piece is the longer refusal of a fixed path.
Distinct From Adjacent Ideas
Not the yearly-palace method. Method answers “where am I?” House of origin answers “what is it like when the where is my own cell?” You need the first to know you have the second. You do not need a nine-page palace tour every time you are home.
Not the Character Star. Inner processing can still clash with a home year. A Life 1 at home in the North who carries a Character 6 will have a very principled winter. See character star.
Not “remaining” as immobility. Some English copy says you “remain” in the palace. That is a sitting word. You can still travel, marry, quit, or begin. The year does not nail your shoes to the floor. It removes a certain kind of resistance to being typical.
Not a compatibility blessing. If both partners are at home the same year, you get two people running their default software at full volume. That can be sweet. It can also be a standoff with no translator. Compatibility still wants house positions — here, two home positions — plus a decision, not a green cell.
How to Use a Home Year
Write: “This year my 3 is in the East; the start-habit will be cheap.” Then the edge: “The cheap start is also the scatter risk.” Pick one project that deserves the discount. That is the decision protocol with the constraint supplied by familiarity.
Month visitors still move. A 5-visitor month does not cancel a home year. Use the monthly cycle as a scheduler. If the last home year was nine years ago, the useful question is who you were then — not whether the year will “repeat.” The cycle returns. You do not.
The Whisper can flag a home sitting. It should not coronate the year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a house-of-origin year lucky? It is familiar. Lucky is a slot-machine word. Familiar can be productive or lazy.
How often does it happen? Usually every nine years for a given Life Star, if you keep one calculation school. Changing schools changes the anniversary.
Is this the same as honmei-sei? Honmei-sei is the Life Star itself. House of origin is the year that star sits in its own palace.
Should I wait to act until I am at home? No. That is one year in nine. Waiting for home is how people donate eight years to a slogan.
