A 3 Wood Life Star and a 7 Metal Life Star sit on one printout. A Moon–Saturn contact sits on another. Someone asks which page is true. That is the wrong contest. You asked two maps two different questions.
Nine Star Ki and synastry are two relationship maps: one compares Life Stars and their current palace positions; the other compares planetary contacts across two natal charts. Neither is a court. Both can give language for a difference you already half-recognize. Choosing between them is a question of inputs and jobs, not of electing a winner.
This page is a comparison for choosing a reading. It does not replace Nine Star Ki compatibility, which is the pair method itself. The sky-map desk is the synastry chart guide. For product shape, see how to choose a compatibility reading. After any mixed report: how to read a relationship reading.
What each map actually uses
| Nine Star Ki pair | Synastry | |
|---|---|---|
| Core inputs | Two birth dates (year and month matter; time is usually secondary) | Two birth dates; times and places if houses and angles are claimed |
| Unit of comparison | Natal Life Stars, plus yearly and monthly palace positions | Planet-to-planet aspects and, with times, house overlays |
| What it can name | Habitual elemental friction or ease, and a calendar for when that friction gets louder | How one chart’s planets contact the other’s |
| What it cannot name | Commitment, kindness, or a future | The same, plus anything that required a time you do not have |
| Typical failure | A nine-by-nine color table treated as a score | A red aspect treated as a sentence |
If a page blends them into one percentage, ask which stars and which aspects entered the percentage. A blended score is a product decision, not a discovery.
Nine Star Ki can work from dates. Synastry of planets that do not depend on houses can also work from dates. House overlays, the Ascendant, and the Descendant need recorded times. Leave those claims limited when a time is missing.
A fictional Friday, two printouts
Haru and Lina — invented for this page — receive two short results in one week. A Nine Star Ki note calls them a 3 and a 7: start versus polish, Wood meeting Metal. A synastry blurb flags Moon–Venus contacts and talks about ease in the room. Friday they argue about whether to host friends.
Haru uses the 3 to say the night should begin now. Lina uses Venus to say the room should feel finished first. Each has picked the paragraph that sponsors a preference. The unused paragraphs were equally available: a 7 can also name Lina’s wish for a livable evening, and a Moon contact can also name Haru’s wish to be received without a production.
The honest use is to put both maps down and describe Friday without them. Who was tired. Who had already cleaned. Who always chooses the guest list. Then, if a sentence from either map still fits, keep that sentence as language. If it only fits as ammunition, drop it.
What a relationship reading is is built for this: one question, more than one engine, no verdict.
Which map to open first
Open Nine Star Ki when you want a small elemental vocabulary and a year-or-month calendar for when a known friction gets louder. It is a scheduling map more than a character court. The compatibility page is the method; this page is only the choice.
Open synastry when you want inter-chart planetary contacts and you know how much time data you actually have. If your question is “where do their planets fall in my houses,” you need times. If your question is “what happens when I want to start and they want to finish the room,” dates may be enough for either map.
Open a combined reading when the question is larger than either poster and you want more than one engine held in one place. Whisper’s current Relationship Reading uses Western astrology, BaZi, and numerology — not Nine Star Ki as a fourth engine. That limit should stay visible. You can still use a Ki pair on the side without forcing the product to pretend it calculated palaces it did not.
Do not open both on the same afternoon in order to collect a yes. Two maps that agree can still be wrong about the week. Two maps that disagree can still be useful about the week.
Disagreement is not a vote
They should disagree sometimes. Ki is a severe compression into nine numbers and a moving square. Synastry is a crowded sky. A tense natal Life Star pair can sit next to easy Venus language. A “harmonious” number pair can sit next to a demanding Saturn contact.
Disagreement is information about the maps. It is not a hidden ballot on whether you should stay. Name the engine of any paragraph you keep. Mark description versus instruction. Turn the new sentence into a question the other person can answer.
Whisper’s Relationship Reading is a saved written report that uses Western astrology, BaZi, and numerology with the context you type. It is not a live session. Birth time and city are optional. A free preview follows Google sign-in, with no card required. The optional full reading is a US$29 one-time purchase, saved in My Readings, with no membership.

Bring Friday. The maps need a night that actually happened.
Frequently asked questions
Which is more accurate?
Neither is a laboratory instrument. Accuracy here means: did the sentence describe a real moment, and did you keep it from becoming an order?
Does Whisper calculate Nine Star Ki in the Relationship Reading?
The current product uses Western astrology, BaZi, and numerology. If you want Ki specifically, use a Ki method on its own terms rather than forcing it into a report that did not run it.
Do I need birth times for both maps?
Usually no for Life Stars. No for a limited synastry of planets that do not depend on houses. Yes for house overlays and angles.
If they disagree, which do I trust?
Trust the moment you can point to. Then ask the other person. The maps are optional after that.
