I Ching for a Job Decision

After the numbers are on the table, the I Ching can name the condition of a job fork — stay or take the offer, apply or wait — without becoming a hiring manager.

Two offers sit on the same kitchen table. Commute, title, and hours are already compared. The remaining fog is not a missing spreadsheet. It is a quality-of-role question the numbers will not finish. That is a job sitting, not a 3 a.m. paralysis sitting.

I Ching for a job decision means aiming one hexagram at a work fork you can still execute — stay or take the offer, apply or wait — after ordinary analysis, not asking the book to hire you. It cannot rank companies, name a 2027 title, or turn a layoff into a moral.

The format: what a career reading is. Phrase the question with I Ching question hygiene. Read the figure with how to interpret a reading.

This is not the personal stay/send/wait protocol. That page is I Ching for a stuck decision — the bed, the unsent apology, the lease you have not signed. If you lie awake and cannot send a resignation, go there. If you have a term sheet or a board-facing hire, use the longer business protocol. This page is the middle: a job fork after you have already done the ordinary work.

What counts as a job fork

A job fork is a choice you can execute this month, with facts already in hand: stay through the quarter or take Offer B; apply now or wait for a craft opening; accept the louder project or keep the scoped week.

If you do not have the facts — pay band, hours, who you would report to — you are under-informed, not undecided. Get the fact. If you have already decided and want the hexagram to overrule you, you are hiding. That case belongs on the stop list. “What career should I have?” is a poster. Rewrite until a colleague could disagree.

Four steps for a job sitting

1. Exhaust the ordinary list first

Write what you already know: hours, scope, who decides, what you would give up. Talk to one person who has done the job. The book is not a substitute for that call. After the list, the question often sharpens: not “should I take it?” but “what is the quality of this role’s visibility against the week I can actually keep?”

2. Convert the fork so it is not “Should I”

The book is a decision text, not a manager.

Fork you are grippingQuestion that can meet a hexagram
Should I take Offer B?What is the nature of Offer B’s public week?
Should I apply now? What is the quality of this search as I am running it?
Should I wait for a title? What kind of waiting is this — ripening, or stall?

Write the converted question. Date it. One question per sitting. If you cannot convert it, you want a coin toss. Use an actual coin and own it.

3. Cast once, interpret in order

Six throws, or a single computational figure if that is your honest method. Once.

Read: question, primary hexagram, changing lines, relating figure as tilt. Cheap translations ruin job sittings. Hexagram 10 names a kind of treading — careful steps on something that can bite — not “take the bigger title.” Hexagram 33 names a withdrawal quality, not a filed notice. Hexagram 5 names a weather of waiting, not a start date.

Write the paragraph the same day. If you cannot, you are still bargaining with the Image.

4. Name a next act the book does not have to sign

Twelve words or fewer. A stranger could see it: ask Offer B who covers nights; keep this job through the 30th; send two applications, then close the tabs. “None — I am staying through the quarter” is a decision. Close the bag for fourteen days. A recast on night three is a veto loop.

If the remaining fog is a number — rate versus salary — that is a different sitting: I Ching for a money decision. Do not let one hexagram quit and reprice.

A fictional two-offer Tuesday

Priya — invented for this page — holds Offer A, a louder title, and Offer B, a quieter craft role. She has already compared pay and commute. She casts and receives Hexagram 10, Treading, tilting toward something a forum called “favorable.” The forum says take the title.

The forum does not know Offer A’s on-call week. It does not know that Priya already sleeps poorly after public days.

A sitting inside this method would say: Treading names a path that looks smooth and is not. The next act is not “sign A.” It might be “ask A who covers nights” and “write the hours B will not take.” The chart of another tradition, if it appears later — a BaZi career-timing line, a Midheaven note — is another dialect. Name it. Do not average it into “80% take A.”

What this sitting refuses

It refuses using a daily hexagram as the job sitting. Thursday weather is not a fork. For the single-system exercise on this page, avoid repeated casts or extra systems used to seek a preferred answer. A deliberately structured multi-perspective reading is a different format; it should keep each perspective distinct rather than treat symbols as votes. It refuses treating the book as a person who “told you” to resign. You resign. “The hexagram” is not a reason a manager can live with.

Questions readers ask

How is this different from I Ching for a stuck decision?

That page is personal motion — stay, send, wait — when you cannot get out of a chair. This page is a job fork after the numbers. Midnight resignation panic belongs there. Two compared offers belong here.

Can the I Ching tell me which company to join?

No. It can name a quality of the role-week you asked about. It cannot see a team it does not have.

What if timing weather in another system says wait?

Weather describes conditions. If the job is disappearing, move. Enter the move with a smaller first claim. Do not wait for every clock to agree.

Do I need a birth time?

Not for a hexagram. If you later open a Midheaven or a Zi Wei Career Palace (官禄宮), time starts to matter. Leave those claims open when the hour is missing.
