In Western astrology, “planets” is a working term. It includes the Sun and Moon. It includes Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, which are not planets by the current IAU definition. The word here means moving points used as functions in the chart, not a lesson in astronomy.
Each planet is a verb. The sign shows how the verb is conjugated. The house shows where it tends to happen. The aspects show which other verbs interrupt or help. If you only memorize “Venus means love,” you will miss most of what Venus does.
This is the cluster page for planetary meanings. Deeper single-planet guides exist for Mercury, Venus, and Mars. Timing-specific pages already exist for Saturn return and Jupiter return.
Personal Planets: The Daily Cast
The Sun. Visible identity, vitality, the project of being someone in particular. The Sun is over-weighted in popular horoscopes and under-weighted as a house placement. A tenth-house Sun and a fourth-house Sun are not the same life, even in the same sign. The Sun describes what you are trying to keep lit. It does not describe your entire character.
The Moon. Habit, appetite, memory, the body that wants what it wants before you have a speech about it. The Moon is closer to mood than the Sun is, but “mood” is too small. It is the set of conditions under which you can rest. A Moon in an air sign often rests through talk. A Moon in an earth sign often rests through something tangible. See Moon sign vs sun sign.
Mercury. Perception, speech, sorting, short travel, the way you change your mind. Mercury is not “intelligence.” It is the interface. Retrograde periods get more press than they deserve; the natal Mercury sign is a more stable fact than a three-week transit. Dedicated page: Mercury in astrology.
Venus. Valuation. What you move toward, how you make peace, what you find beautiful enough to keep. Romance is one theater. Money, taste, and diplomacy are others. Venus does not promise a relationship style that will be convenient for other people. Dedicated page: Venus in astrology.
Mars. Assertion, heat, sexual initiative, anger, the first move. Mars is the planet people moralize fastest. A strong Mars is not cruelty. A quiet Mars is not virtue. Mars describes how you spend the will you actually have. Dedicated page: Mars in astrology.
These five, plus the angles of the birth chart, will take you further than a PDF of fifty asteroids.
Social Planets: Growth and Form
Jupiter. Increase, belief, permission, the story that makes a risk feel meaningful. Jupiter is not guaranteed luck. It is the place where you expect the room to get bigger. Unchecked, that expectation becomes excess. A Jupiter return — roughly every twelve years — is a timing cycle with a clean astronomical definition; the interpretation should stay modest.
Saturn. Limit, time, craft, consequence, the adult in the chart. Saturn is not punishment. It is the planet of “this will take as long as it takes.” People meet Saturn as shame, as discipline, or as a standard they slowly become able to meet. The Saturn return around 28–30 and 58–60 is the most widely lived Saturn timing in contemporary culture.
Jupiter and Saturn together describe how you handle scale. One says more. One says enough. Charts with a tight Jupiter-Saturn aspect often belong to people who cannot treat those as separate questions.
Outer Planets: Generational Weather, Personal When Touched
Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto stay in a sign for years or decades. Whole classrooms share them. They become personal when they conjunct an angle or aspect the Sun, Moon, or a personal planet. The existing Journal guide is outer planets: Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.
Uranus. Interruption, invention, the refusal of a script. Natal Uranus on the Moon can describe a nervous system that will not be domesticated by routine. Uranus in a sign, alone, describes a generation’s argument with its institutions.
Neptune. Dissolution, longing, ideal, confusion, the wish that the boundary were not there. Neptune on Venus can glamorize attachment. Neptune on Mercury can make language beautiful and contracts dangerous. The craft is discernment, not more faith.
Pluto. Intensity, control, compost, the thing that must change form. Pluto is the most over-written planet in modern astrology. Keep it small: where you meet power, including your own, and where you are tempted to handle fear by dominating or disappearing.
If you want the physics-scale reminder that these bodies are not tugging on your blood, the science piece is planetary gravity and the human body. Astrology as practiced here is a symbolic clock, not a force model.
Other Points You Will Meet in Apps
Chiron. A comet-like body used as a wound-and-craft symbol. The Journal already has Chiron as wound and healer. Useful if you keep it from becoming a brand of pain.
Lilith. Several astronomical and hypothetical points share the name. See Lilith, the dark Moon. If an app does not say which Lilith, the placement is not comparable.
Nodes. The North and South Nodes are orbital intersections, not planets. They are used for trajectory language. Guide: North Node and South Node.
You do not need these to read a chart. Add them after the ten functions above are clear.
A Method for Reading Any Planet
- Name the function in one verb.
- Add the sign as an adverb.
- Add the house as a location.
- Add the tightest aspect as a relationship.
- Translate into a scene from ordinary life.
- Check the scene against memory. Discard what only sounds like a horoscope.
Example: “Mars in Taurus in the sixth house square Mercury in Leo in the third” becomes “I start slowly, in the work of the day, and I get irritated when someone wants a faster, louder explanation.” That sentence can be wrong. That is why it is useful.
For the order of operations across the whole wheel, use how to read a natal chart.
Dignity, Rulership, and Why Beginners Can Wait
Traditional astrology assigns planets ruling signs, exaltations, detriments, and falls. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio; it is in detriment in Libra and Taurus. These dignities are a second language. They refine tone. They do not override a tight aspect or an angular placement.
If you are still learning functions, skip essential dignity for a month. You will read more clearly without a medieval scoring system competing with the picture. When you want the scoring system, use planetary dignities. Solar proximity (combust and cazimi) is a separate, narrower condition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which planet is the most important? The one on an angle, or the one in the tightest aspect to the Sun or Moon. There is no universal ranking.
Should I include Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto? Include them when they touch something personal. Otherwise read them as background.
Why do Vedic charts use different planets? Classical Jyotiṣa uses the visible planets plus the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu) and does not use Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto in the same way. Comparison: Western vs Vedic.
Do planets cause events? Not in any demonstrated physical sense. In this Journal they are treated as named functions in a symbolic system. The claim to handle with care is usefulness, not causation.
