Planetary Dignities Explained: Domicile, Detriment, Exaltation, Fall

Dignities are traditional working conditions for planets — domicile, detriment, exaltation, and fall. Use them as volume knobs, not moral grades. Here is the map for the seven classical planets, in ordinary language.

A beginner sees “Mars in Libra, detriment” and hears a verdict: this Mars is bad. A more experienced beginner sees “Sun in Aries, exalted” and hears a compliment. Both readings treat a traditional condition as a moral grade. That is not what the vocabulary was built to do.

Dignities are working conditions. They describe how easily a planet’s function can operate in a given sign, the way a tool works better in some rooms than others. A hammer is not a better person in a workshop than in a library. It is better placed.

In a natal chart, you still have the function. Mars in Libra still starts, wants, and argues. It just does that work in a sign that prefers negotiation to heat. The volume changes. The person does not become a lesser planet.

The Four Classical Labels

Traditional Western astrology uses a small set of essential dignities. “Essential” here means “by sign,” as opposed to accidental dignity, which is about house, speed, and solar proximity — the family that includes combustion and cazimi.

Domicile (rulership). The planet is in a sign it rules. The tool is in its own workshop. Mars in Aries or Scorpio. Venus in Taurus or Libra. The function does not have to translate itself to get a sentence out.

Detriment. The planet is in the sign opposite its domicile. The tool is in someone else’s workshop, using someone else’s rules. Mars in Libra or Taurus. Venus in Aries or Scorpio. The function still works. It works against a grain.

Exaltation. A sign where the planet is treated as an honored guest — not the owner, but unusually well supported. The Sun in Aries. Jupiter in Cancer. Exaltation is not “better than domicile.” It is a different kind of ease, sometimes louder, sometimes less stable, because a guest can be asked to leave.

Fall. The sign opposite the exaltation. The honored-guest treatment is withdrawn. The Sun in Libra. Jupiter in Capricorn. Again: condition, not crime.

There are finer layers — triplicity, terms, faces — that medieval astrologers scored into tables. You do not need them on a first pass. If the four labels are not yet useful as volume knobs, a scoring system will only give you a number to over-trust.

The Seven Classical Planets, Mapped

This is the table, written as sentences so it cannot be screenshotted as a ranking.

Sun. Domicile in Leo. Detriment in Aquarius. Exalted in Aries. Fall in Libra. The visible-project function is at home in Leo, on display as a guest in Aries, and has to share the light in the air signs.

Moon. Domicile in Cancer. Detriment in Capricorn. Exalted in Taurus. Fall in Scorpio. Need and habit are housed in Cancer, fed in Taurus, and asked for proof or intensity in the opposite signs.

Mercury. Domicile in Gemini and Virgo. Detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces. Exalted in Virgo (some sources say Aquarius; Virgo is the common teaching). Fall in Pisces. The interface planet is built for sorting and speech; the big-picture and the oceanic signs ask it to stop itemizing.

Venus. Domicile in Taurus and Libra. Detriment in Scorpio and Aries. Exalted in Pisces. Fall in Virgo. Bonding and value have rooms in the earth-and-air pair; they work harder in the martial signs and get a different kind of ease in Pisces.

Mars. Domicile in Aries and Scorpio. Detriment in Libra and Taurus. Exalted in Capricorn. Fall in Cancer. Drive has its own heat and its own depth; it is a guest with a job in Capricorn; it is asked to soften or nest in Cancer.

Jupiter. Domicile in Sagittarius and Pisces. Detriment in Gemini and Virgo. Exalted in Cancer. Fall in Capricorn. Expansion prefers the wide signs; the mercurial signs ask it to specify; Cancer hosts it; Capricorn invoices it.

Saturn. Domicile in Capricorn and Aquarius. Detriment in Cancer and Leo. Exalted in Libra. Fall in Aries. Limit and structure own the winter signs, sit in judgment as a guest in Libra, and have to work without a friendly room in the solar and lunar signs.

If you want the functions themselves — what Mars does regardless of sign — use the planets guide. Dignity is a condition of that function, not a replacement for it.

Volume Knobs, With a Scene

Translate before you moralize.

Mars in Taurus (detriment) in the 10th: initiative has to push through a sign that prefers the long job. Scene: the person who will not start the conflict in the meeting and then stays late to finish the work the conflict would have cleared. Craft: picking one stubborn project instead of waiting for a hotter mood.

Sun in Aries (exaltation) in the 12th: the visible project is well-supported by sign and tucked away by house. Scene: someone whose confidence shows in private work and then surprises people when it goes public. Craft: scheduling visibility on purpose, because the sign will not remind you that a 12th-house Sun can hide.

Moon in Capricorn (detriment): need meets a rule about deserving. Scene: rest that has to be earned. That is a standing tension, not a damaged Moon. The square-like feeling is coming from sign condition even if no aspect is involved.

Notice that house and aspect can override the volume knob. Saturn in Aries on the Midheaven is in fall and still one of the loudest facts in the chart. Dignity does not win against an angle. A well-dignified Venus buried in a cadent house, unaspected, can be easy to miss. Condition is one layer. It is not the scoreboard.

Reception Is How the Labels Talk

A planet in detriment is not stranded if it is received. Mutual reception — two planets in each other’s signs — is a cooperation agreement. Mars in Taurus and Venus in Aries are each in the other’s detriment and each other’s domicile, depending on how you look. They can trade tools. A planet in fall that is received by the sign ruler has a phone number to call.

Without reception, a hard aspect is just a hard aspect. With reception, the same square has a negotiation channel. That is one of the more useful traditional ideas, and it keeps dignities from becoming a caste system.

One Paragraph on the Outers

Modern astrology assigned Uranus to Aquarius, Neptune to Pisces, and Pluto to Scorpio. Those assignments are recent, inconsistent across authors, and they collide with Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars as traditional rulers. If you use modern rulerships, say so, and do not mix them into a traditional dignity score as if Ptolemy had met Pluto. For house rulers and essential dignity, the seven classical planets are enough. The outers still matter as generational points and as contacts to personal planets. They do not need a throne to do that job.

What Dignities Cannot Rank

They cannot rank people. A chart full of domiciles is not a better life. A chart full of falls is not a harder fate. Competent lives run on detriment planets when the grain became a craft. Easy dignities sit unused when nothing asked them to work.

They also cannot survive as compliments. “Exalted Sun” sounds like a prize. It is a working condition for the solar function in Aries. Pair it with house, aspects, and biography, or it is a Barnum-friendly badge.

Use dignities after you can name the planet as a verb. Turn the knob: easier, harder, guest, out-of-room. Add elements and modalities if you need a second grid. Then stop before the table becomes a caste list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a planet in fall “weak”? It is less comfortably placed for its usual job. It is not powerless. House, aspects, and reception can make a fallen planet one of the loudest facts you have.

Should I use the scoring tables (points for domicile, terms, faces)? Only after the four labels are useful in ordinary language. A point total is easy to over-trust and hard to check against a Tuesday.

Do Vedic charts use the same dignities? Jyotiṣa has its own exaltations, debilitation, and friendship schemes. Do not paste this table onto a sidereal chart and call it the same claim. See Western vs Vedic.

What about peregrine planets? Peregrine means the planet has none of the essential dignities in that degree — not domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term, or face. It is a traditional “no special support” label, not a curse. If you are not using terms and faces, you do not need the word yet.
