How to Choose a Tarot Deck: Rider–Waite, Thoth, and What Actually Matters

The best first Tarot deck is one whose pictures you can read without a lecture. Here is how Rider–Waite-Smith, Thoth, and pip decks differ — and which buying rules are folklore.

A Tarot deck is a 78-card vocabulary. The best first deck is the one whose pictures let you finish a sentence without a teacher in the room. Almost everything else — the cloth, the “cleansing,” the idea that the deck chooses you — is optional atmosphere.

This page is a buying and choosing guide for people who will actually read. It sits under guidance, not prediction and next to the Major and Minor references.

The Three Families You Will Meet

Rider–Waite–Smith (RWS) and its clones. Pamela Colman Smith’s 1909 pictures put scenes on all 56 Minors, not just the Majors. That is why beginners can read the Three of Swords without Latin. Most English-language books assume this family. If you want the largest trail of teachers, start here. There are hundreds of recolorings. The structure is the same.

Thoth. Aleister Crowley and Lady Frieda Harris. Denser esoteric overlay, different names on some Majors, a different court structure. Beautiful, and a worse first deck if you do not already like the system. Learn RWS, then visit Thoth if you want the extra language.

Pip decks (Marseilles and relatives). Minors are mostly suit symbols plus numbers, like playing cards. Historically important — see Tarot origin. Harder for a first read unless you enjoy number-and-suit arithmetic. Excellent later.

Oracle decks (non-78, no suits) are a different tool. Do not buy one thinking it is Tarot. It can still be a useful prompt. The split is its own page: Tarot vs oracle cards.

What to Look at Before You Pay

Open a sample of the Minors, not just The Star. Can you tell a story from the Five of Pentacles and the Eight of Cups without text? If yes, the deck will teach you. If every Minor is a decorative pip with a tiny icon, you will live in the guidebook.

Also check:

  • Card stock and size. Oversized art decks are hard to shuffle.
  • Faces and bodies. If the people in the deck do not include anyone who looks like the lives you actually read for, you will work harder than you need to. That is a practical criterion, not a slogan.
  • Text on the card. Some decks print keywords. Fine for study; they can flatten a picture if you never look past the word.

You do not need a “gifted” deck. You do not need to sleep with it. You do not need to refuse a factory-wrapped deck because it was touched by commerce. You need 78 pictures you will use. Physical upkeep — boxes, humidity, when to replace — is how to care for a Tarot deck.

Folklore You Can Ignore

  • “The deck chooses you.” You choose a tool. Attraction helps. Mystery is optional.
  • “Never buy your own deck.” A Victorian-ish superstition. Buy the deck.
  • “You must cleanse with moonlight.” If a ritual helps you start, take it. The cards do not require lunar HR.
  • “A first deck must be RWS yellow box.” RWS structure is the useful part. The reprint can be any decent clone.

If you like atmosphere, have atmosphere. Do not let atmosphere delay the first three-card reading.

Apps Versus a Physical Deck

An app is a good daily name and a poor way to learn pictures — you scroll, you do not handle. A physical deck is a good teacher and a poor commute tool. Many people use both. App reviews live at best Tarot apps 2026. The Whisper’s daily card is date-seeded software, not a replacement for a deck you can spread on a table.

If you only use an app, you can still learn the structure from the Major and Minor guides on this Journal. The muscle memory of shuffling is optional, not a credential.

A Simple Buying Decision

  1. Start with an RWS-structured deck whose Minors you can read as scenes.
  2. Use it for six weeks of beginner spreads.
  3. Buy a second deck only if the first one’s pictures started to bore you, or if you want Marseilles/Thoth on purpose.

One well-used deck beats a shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Tarot deck for beginners? An RWS-structured deck with fully illustrated Minors and a size you can shuffle. The “best” list changes by year; the criteria do not.

Can I mix cards from two decks? You can. You will regret it until you know both vocabularies.

Do I need the original 1909 colors? No. You need the compositional information Smith put in the scenes.

Is a more expensive deck more accurate? No. See does Tarot predict the future?. Price buys paper and art, not sight.

Some patterns only appear when the reading becomes personal.
