One person is in a year that wants beginnings. The other is in a year that wants completion. The calendar did not assign them a breakup. It assigned two different homework sets, and the homework is colliding in the same kitchen.
Personal Year numbers in a relationship are two timing overlays — birth month plus birth day plus the current calendar year — read as climates, not as a forecast of whether the pair continues. Each result, 1 through 9 (or a master, if you keep them), is a named theme in a repeating nine-year cycle. It is not a weather alert about the other person’s loyalty.
Natal pairing still starts with numerology compatibility and how Life Path compatibility works. The smaller natal cousin of this page is birthday number compatibility. After any timing paragraph: how to read a relationship reading.
How two Personal Years are calculated
Add birth month + reduced birth day + the reduced current year. Example, invented only as arithmetic: 14 March in 2026 is 3 + 5 + 1 = 9. The partner born 2 November in the same calendar year is 11 + 2 + 1, then reduced by your house rule.
Some readers begin the Personal Year on 1 January. Others begin it on the birthday. January-start is easier to journal together. Birthday-start matches a solar-return instinct. Pick one and use it for both people. Do not start one person’s year in January and the other’s on a birthday so the story looks neater.
Universal Year is only the calendar year reduced. It is not personal. A newspaper column about “the 1 year” is not your pair’s climate.
Master-number policy appears here too. Many readers still reduce timing numbers to 1–9. If you keep 11, say so. Use the same rule twice.
Nine climates, kept too small to predict with
1. Starting, planting; cost is impatience.
2. Pairing, waiting, tact; cost is passivity.
3. Voice and social heat; cost is scatter.
4. Form and unglamorous build; cost is joylessness.
5. Change and unscripted time; cost is mess.
6. Household duty; cost is resentment.
7. Study and withdrawal; cost is isolation sold as depth.
8. Stakes and the ledger; cost is treating people as totals.
9. Completion and release; cost is theatrical endings.
A 5-year next to a 4-year is not “incompatible timing.” It is a year in which one climate asks for motion and the other asks for form. The pair can use that sentence. They cannot use it as a delay on a decision they already know they need to make.
Life Path still sits underneath. A Life Path 5 in a 4 year is being asked to tolerate form. That is an assignment inside one chart. It does not rewrite the other person’s year.
A fictional lease conversation
Luis is in a Personal Year 1. Hannah is in a Personal Year 6. In this invented scene, Luis wants to move cities for a job that starts in August. Hannah is mid-renovation and helping a parent with appointments. A timing post tells them “1 and 6 can struggle” and hints that someone will have to sacrifice a path.
The numbers named a clash of assignments: beginning versus duty already in progress. They did not decide the lease. The useful questions are ordinary. What is the latest date a decision is still kind? Which parts of the renovation or the care can move, and which cannot? What would Luis’s beginning look like if the city change waited six months — and what would Hannah’s duty look like if it had to travel?
If they treat 9-adjacent language (Hannah is not even in a 9) as a sign that the relationship should end so Luis can start, they have imported a plot. What a relationship reading is is the corrective: comparison against a question, not a court.
How to use two years this month
- Write both Personal Years and the start rule (1 January or birthday).
- Write one sentence each: what the climate is asking for, in kitchen language.
- Name one shared decision on the calendar — a move, a visit, a budget, a conversation you keep postponing.
- Ask where the two climates pull that decision in different directions.
- Choose a next action that is available this month, and a date to review it. Grade the sentences in December. A cycle you never audit is décor.
Do not stack Personal Year plus transits plus dashas on the same afternoon. Pick one clock. Numerology timing is already a thin clock.
When timing belongs in a wider reading
A year number is a climate label. A relationship reading can hold two climates next to Western astrology and BaZi, and next to the lease, the job, or the renovation you will actually type.

Common questions
When does our Personal Year start?
House rule: 1 January or the birthday. State which, and use it for both people.
If we are both in a 5 year, should we travel or change everything?
A shared 5-theme is a shared invitation to notice change. Whether a particular change is wise is not a numerological question.
Is a 9 year a sign to leave?
It is a year whose theme is completion and release. People notice endings when they have decided the year is about endings. The other person’s answer still has to be asked.
Does Personal Year replace Life Path pairing?
No. One is a natal compression. The other is a timing overlay. Read them in different columns.
