Two “Chinese new years” sit on the winter calendar, and they are not the same switch. Lunar New Year is the festival: the dinner, the red envelopes, the date the restaurant placemat changes the animal. Lichun (立春, Start of Spring) is a solar term, usually 4 February, sometimes the 3rd or the 5th. BaZi year pillars and Nine Star Ki year numbers typically change at Lichun. The party often changes earlier, or later, or — in lazy English lists — on 1 January.
If you were born in January or the first days of February, you can collect three year-labels without leaving the hospital. That is a calendar dispute. It is not a mystery about your character.
Element on the animal: Chinese zodiac five elements. The year as a BaZi column: year pillar. The Four Pillars frame: what is BaZi.
Three Cuts, One Passport
1 January. The civil year. Almost never the cut for these systems. English pages that say “1990 is the Year of the Horse” for every 1990 birth are using this cut, or pretending the lunar year and the Gregorian year coincide.
Lunar New Year. The second new moon after the winter solstice in the usual rule, which lands between late January and mid-February. In 1990 it was 27 January. Folk zodiac conversation uses this date. If you are talking about the animal on a banquet, this is the switch most people mean.
Lichun. The solar term when the sun reaches 315° of tropical longitude. In 1990 it was 4 February, 10:14 Beijing time. Classical almanacs and most serious BaZi software start the year pillar here. Nine Star Ki uses the same solar gate for the Life Star year. How to calculate Nine Star Ki is the arithmetic; this page is the gate.
The month pillar uses the same solar-term family. Tiger month is the Lichun month. That is why the year cut and the first month cut are the same conversation.
Worked Date: Born 25 January 1990
A passport that says 25 January 1990 is easy to misfile.
Civil year: 1990. Lazy lists file this as Horse, because 1990 is printed as a Horse year on posters that never mention January.
Lunar New Year 1990: 27 January. A birth on the 25th is still before the festival. The folk animal has not switched. The child is still in the previous lunar year: Snake, the 1989 animal (己巳, Ji Si, Earth Snake in the stem-branch pair).
Lichun 1990: 4 February, mid-morning in Beijing. The 25th is also before the solar gate. BaZi still uses the 1989 year pillar: Ji Si. Nine Star Ki still uses the 1989 solar year. The gender-neutral Life Star math on 1989 is 1 Water, not the 9 Fire you would get from treating the birth as a 1990 solar year.
So this birthday is a clean lesson in “your passport year is not the calendar these systems use.” All of the careful cuts still say previous year. The disagreement is with the poster that printed “1990 = Horse” and with any form that only asked for a four-digit year.
The sharper disagreement — the one the title promises — opens two days later.
The Window Where Party and Chart Split
From 27 January 1990 through the morning of 4 February 1990, the festival has switched and Lichun has not.
A birth on 30 January 1990 is:
- Horse on the banquet card (lunar year has opened)
- Snake in BaZi (year pillar still Ji Si until Lichun)
- 1 Water in Nine Star Ki (still the 1989 solar year), not 9 Fire
Same hospital, five days apart from our 25 January native, and now the party animal and the chart year actually disagree. This window exists most years, in one direction or the other. When Lunar New Year falls after Lichun, you get the reverse: solar year already new, banquet still serving last year’s animal.
Timezone can move a birth across Lichun when the term lands in the morning. 4 February 1990 at 10:14 in Beijing is still 3 February evening in North America. A “4 February” birth is not automatically the new solar year. Check the instant, not the printed day.
What to Do When Apps Disagree
Do not average the animals. Do not pick the one you like. Label the cut.
- Write the civil date and the timezone of birth.
- Look up that year’s Lunar New Year and that year’s Lichun instant.
- Assign a festival animal (lunar) and a chart year (Lichun) as two labeled facts.
- If you also use Nine Star Ki, reuse the Lichun year. Do not invent a third cut.
If a BaZi app uses Lunar New Year for the year pillar, it is using a folk shortcut. Some lineages do that on purpose. Ask. If a Nine Star Ki app uses 1 January, it is wrong for the system as usually taught.
Science of the Chinese zodiac is the research caveat on animal-as-personality. This page is not trying to rescue the mascot. It is trying to stop two calendars from being treated as one switch.
Why the Split Exists at All
Lunar months follow the moon. Solar terms follow the sun’s longitude. Chinese civil life has used both for a long time: the festival for ritual and family, the solar terms for agriculture and for the almanac math that BaZi inherited. There is no committee that declared one of them “the real Chinese new year.” There are two jobs.
Popular English collapsed them because “Chinese New Year” is easier to print than “Lichun, a solar term near 4 February, which is when the year pillar increments in the Four Pillars calendar.” The collapse is why January birthdays produce forum fights.
You do not have to pick a side for dinner. You do have to pick a side for a chart, and then keep the label. The Whisper’s BaZi and Nine Star Ki layers use a documented solar cut. Keep the festival animal in a separate sentence. Do not make a daily reading adjudicate the banquet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Lichun always 4 February? Usually. Some years it is 3 or 5 February, and the clock time moves. Edge births need the term table for that year, not a memorized date.
Which cut should I use for a restaurant zodiac conversation? Lunar New Year, unless everyone at the table is a BaZi person. Say which cut you mean if anyone was born in the window.
Does the day pillar also flip at Lichun? No. Lichun flips the year (and opens Tiger month). The day pair follows the day’s calendar conversion. Do not move a Day Master because the solar year changed.
Why does Nine Star Ki agree with BaZi here and not with the banquet? Both use Lichun as the year gate. The banquet uses the lunar new moon. Agreement between BaZi and 9SK on January births is expected. Agreement with the placemat is not.
Where do I put the year once the cut is fixed? As one column of four in BaZi, or as the year number in Nine Star Ki calculation. The animal-plus-element overlay is five elements.
