Ten Gods in BaZi Compatibility: Roles in the Chart, Not Roles in the House

The Ten Gods are relational labels for stems relative to a Day Master. In a couple reading they describe chart roles — not assigned jobs in a household.

A Ten Gods table looks like a staffing plan. Resource, output, wealth, power, peer — each word is easy to lift off the chart and pin on a person. Someone cooks. Someone earns. Someone “provides structure.” The vocabulary was never a chore chart.

The Ten Gods are relational labels for other stems relative to a Day Master; in compatibility they describe roles inside each chart, not jobs assigned in a house. Direct and indirect forms double the five relationships into ten. That is technique. It is not permission to decide who apologizes.

The labeling system itself is the Ten Gods explained. The pair-level caution is BaZi compatibility beyond the Day Master. For the question box, use questions to ask a relationship reading. After the report: how to read a relationship reading.

Five pairs, no roster

Relative to one Day Master, other stems are sorted by elemental relationship and polarity:

Role pairChart languageNot a household assignment
Peer / companionSame element as the Day Master”You are the social one”
OutputWhat the Day Master produces”You do the talking and the art”
WealthWhat the Day Master controls or manages”You handle money, so you decide”
Power / influenceWhat binds or structures the Day Master”You make the rules”
ResourceWhat feeds the Day Master”You support; they shine”

Classical books also moralize some of these names and, in older manuals, map a “spouse star” by gender and polarity. A contemporary reading should say when it is using that convention and should not force two actual people into inherited roles. The spouse-star layer is optional color. It is not a marriage document.

Each person has their own Day Master, so each person has their own Ten Gods map. A stem that is output in one chart can be resource in the other. That mismatch is ordinary. It is not a hidden vote on who is generous.

A fictional living room assignment

Elena and Chris — invented for this page — receive a short BaZi note. Chris’s chart is described as heavy in output. Elena’s is described as heavy in resource. They translate on the spot. Chris will narrate the relationship. Elena will supply calm, research, and recovery.

Sunday afternoon they try to write a message to a landlord. Chris drafts three versions and wants to send the liveliest one. Elena wants the facts checked. Chris cites “output.” Elena cites “resource.” The labels have become costumes.

Put the costumes down and the scene is ordinary: one person likes a finished sentence; the other likes a checked sentence. They can ask, “Do we send a vivid paragraph tonight, or a short accurate one in the morning?” That question does not need a god. If a later paragraph still helps them name the difference, they may keep the sentence as language. If it only helps them win, they drop it.

What a relationship reading is exists for this kind of Sunday: one moment, more than one map, no staffing plan.

What Ten Gods can do in a two-chart reading

They can give you words for a difference you already half-see. A stack of power stars in one natal chart might sit next to a week that is full of deadlines and rules. A missing wealth role in the natal layer is not poverty; it is a chart that talks about resources through other roles, including luck cycles if the method uses them.

Across two charts, a reader may notice that one person’s output stem is the other person’s resource stem, or that both charts lean on peers. That can be an opening theme about how support, competition, or structure shows up. It cannot establish that one person should permanently perform a function for the other.

A useful check:

  1. Name whose Day Master the label is relative to.
  2. Name the stem that received the label.
  3. Ask whether the paragraph describes a chart relationship or issues a household instruction.
  4. Connect the description to one observable moment, or leave it as a possibility.

If you cannot name whose chart the role belongs to, you are reading a blended slogan.

What they cannot assign

They cannot assign blame. They cannot assign rent. They cannot tell you that a “power” role excuses control, or that a “resource” role obliges unpaid care. Technical restraint in a chart is not a license for interpersonal restraint.

They also cannot survive without chart context. Ten Gods without season, balance, and the rest of the pillars is a labeling exercise. Two labeling exercises stacked together are still not a couple.

Other engines in a combined report will not use this vocabulary. A synastry paragraph about Saturn is not a Ten Gods paragraph about power, even if both mention pressure. Name the engine before you keep the sentence.

Whisper’s Relationship Reading is a saved written report that uses Western astrology, BaZi, and numerology with your typed context. It is not a live session and not a complete classical Ten Gods consultation. Birth time and city are optional. A free preview follows Google sign-in, with no card. The optional full reading is US$29 one-time, no membership, saved in My Readings.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Ten Gods actual deities?

No. The English name is a poor translation of shí shén. They are role labels for stems relative to a Day Master.

If my partner is my “wealth star,” does that mean they are money?

No. Wealth is a technical relationship in the chart. It does not turn a person into an account, and it does not tell you who should pay.

Can two people have opposite Ten Gods maps and still be a fit?

“Fit” is not a chart output. Opposite maps can supply language for a difference. The week still has to be lived.

Should I learn all ten names before a reading?

Learn the five pairs well enough to notice when a report is issuing chores. You do not need the full glossary to ask a better question.
