What Are Transits in Astrology? How the Current Sky Talks to Your Chart

Transits are the current planets moving across your natal chart. Learn what a transit actually is, which ones are worth watching, and how to read them as emphasis rather than fate.

A transit is a moving planet in the current sky making an aspect to a point in your natal chart. The natal chart is the snapshot. The transit is the weather crossing that snapshot.

That is the whole mechanism. Everything else — Saturn returns, Mercury retrograde seasons, eclipse weeks — is a named special case of the same geometry. If you understand transits, the rest of timing astrology becomes a vocabulary list rather than a new religion.

This page is the timing hub for the Western astrology cluster.

What Is Actually Moving

From Earth, planets change zodiac degree every day. Software plots those degrees against your natal degrees. When transiting Saturn reaches the degree of your natal Sun, astrologers say “Saturn is transiting the Sun.” When it is 90° away, they say Saturn is squaring the Sun.

The aspect language is the same as natal work. Review astrology aspects explained if you need the five major angles. The difference is timescale. A natal square is a standing condition. A transiting square is a temporary emphasis of that condition, or a new conversation if the two points were not already linked.

You do not need a rising sign to read many transits. Planet-to-planet contacts work from a date. House transits (“Saturn is in your tenth”) require a birth time. See astrology without a birth time.

Which Transits Earn Attention

Not every line on a transit calendar is a life chapter. Weight the transit by three things: the planet’s speed, the natal point it touches, and the tightness of the orb.

Slow planets change chapters. Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto stay on a natal point long enough to describe a season. Saturn on the Sun or Moon is a year-class story. Pluto on an angle is a multi-year story. These are worth a journal, not a push notification.

Social planets change quarters. Jupiter spends about a year in a sign. Mars spends about six weeks. A Jupiter transit can describe a window of permission or inflation. A Mars transit describes heat: more initiative, more conflict, more fatigue. See Mars in astrology for the natal function, and Mars retrograde for the retrograde special case.

Fast planets change weather. The Moon transits a natal planet in hours. Mercury and Venus move in days or weeks. They are useful as texture, not as destiny. The culture around Mercury retrograde is out of proportion to the astronomy; the evidence page is is Mercury retrograde real?.

Natal points that matter more: Sun, Moon, angles (if timed), and any planet already in a tight natal aspect. A transit to a 1° natal square will usually feel more specific than a transit to an unaspected mid-range planet.

How to Read a Transit Without Melodrama

Use the same plain-language template as natal aspects:

Transiting [planet] is asking my natal [planet] to [function]. The aspect is a [conjunction / square / trine / opposition / sextile], so the conversation [fuses / interrupts / eases / faces / can cooperate]. In ordinary life that may look like [scene]. I will not decide [legal / medical / financial move] from this.

Then look at the calendar you already have. If nothing in the week matches, the transit is not the main character. Charts do not owe you a plot twist every time Saturn moves a degree.

A Saturn transit often looks like a deadline, a thinner margin, or a demand to make something durable. A Jupiter transit often looks like a yes that needed a number. A Uranus transit often looks like a script breaking. Those are tendencies, not appointments.

Returns Are Transits With a Clean Definition

A return is a transit of a planet back to its own natal degree.

Returns are popular because the astronomy is crisp. The interpretation should stay modest: a chapter marker, not a prophecy.

Transits Versus Progressions Versus Relocation

Three other timing methods get confused with transits.

Secondary progressions move the natal chart symbolically, usually “a day after birth equals a year of life.” They are not the current sky. Guide: secondary progressions.

Solar returns cast a new chart for the Sun’s return each year. Guide: solar return chart.

Astrocartography relocates the natal chart to other places on Earth. It is space, not time. Guide: astrocartography.

If you stack all four, you will always find a story. That is a problem, not a feature. Pick one timing method for a season.

Eclipses, New Moons, Full Moons

Lunations are transits of the Sun and Moon to each other, then to your natal degrees.

  • New moon — conjunction. A useful prompt for beginning, not a magic reset.
  • Full moon — opposition. A useful prompt for culmination and visibility.
  • Eclipses — lunations near the lunar nodes. Louder folklore, same geometry.

Read them against your chart. A new moon in a sign you do not occupy, making no tight aspect to your planets, is a sky event, not a personal assignment.

Limits

Transits do not cause events in any demonstrated physical sense. They are a clock you can think with. The Journal’s science cluster is explicit about personality claims and ritual effects; timing claims deserve the same humility.

Do not use a transit to:

  • leave a medical protocol
  • sign or void a contract you have not read
  • explain someone else’s cruelty
  • postpone a decision you already know

Use a transit to name the kind of pressure you are already in, then choose the adult response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need exact time to read transits? For planet-to-planet transits, a date is often enough. For house transits and angle contacts, you need a time.

How tight should the orb be? Tighter than natal work. 1–2° for outer-planet transits to personal points is a useful filter. Wider orbs manufacture news.

What is a “transit calendar”? A list of current aspects. Most are noise. Circle Saturn, the outers, and any exact hit to your Sun or Moon. For the class of hits, use Saturn transits and Jupiter transits. The Saturn cycle’s midpoints are the square and the opposition.

Are transits the same in Vedic astrology? The idea of gochara (planetary travel) is related but uses a sidereal zodiac and different weighting. Do not paste tropical transit essays onto a Jyotiṣa chart.
