A software pane dumps twelve numbers under a gochara table and calls one of them lucky. That pane is usually ashtakavarga (aṣṭakavarga, अष्टकवर्ग): eight contributors scoring how many votes a sign receives from the seven classical grahas plus Lagna. The votes are bindus. Used as an overlay on gochara, they tell you whether a transiting planet is walking through a sign that the natal chart itself scored as thick or thin for that planet.
They do not tell you whether the year is blessed. A 5 is not a raise. A 2 is not a funeral. Overlay, over-trust, then one example smaller than a chart dump.
Parent: gochara. The Moon you often count transits from: Chandra rāśi. Two named weathers the overlay gets pasted onto: Sade Sati and Jupiter gochara.
What a Bindu Is Voting For
Each of the eight contributors — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Lagna — looks at the natal positions and, by a fixed classical table, contributes a bindu or not to each of the twelve signs for a given planet’s ashtakavarga. Mars has a Mars ashtakavarga. Saturn has a Saturn ashtakavarga. The Lagna has its own. The tables differ by graha. You do not need to memorize them on day one. You need to know they are natal and fixed: they do not change when Jupiter changes signs. The sky moves. The scorecard does not.
A planet’s individual ashtakavarga (Bhinnashtakavarga) typically shows 0 to 8 bindus per sign. Most signs sit in the middle.
Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) adds the seven planetary tables (ask whether Lagna is in the total). The classical distribution is 337 bindus across twelve signs. The mean is about 28 per sign. A sign at 22 is lean; at 34, thick; at 28, average dressed as a number.
Trikona / ekadhipatya reductions are second-semester. If your app shows a reduced SAV, it has already edited the raw votes. Note which before you compare two years.
The Overlay, Not the Event
Gochara says: Saturn is in this rāśi, which is the Nth house from the Moon. Ashtakavarga says: that rāśi scored K bindus in Saturn’s own table, and S in the SAV.
Read them as volume, not as plot.
- Transit through a sign with a high score in that planet’s AV: the natal chart “recognizes” that sign for that graha. The transit has more of the planet’s own votes under it. That can feel like the planet is doing its job with more material — Saturn structuring, Jupiter enlarging — not like a prize.
- Transit through a low-score sign: fewer votes. The planet is working in a room the natal tables did not stock. That can feel thin, effortful, or simply uneventful. Thin is not doomed.
You still need the house-from-Moon (or from Lagna), the planet’s natal dignity, and the running dasha pair. Ashtakavarga without those is a high score on a wall.
Birth time matters for the Lagna contributor. The seven graha votes use natal signs and can survive a missing time if the Moon is mid-rāśi. A time-unknown SAV is a seven-fold estimate wearing an eight-fold label. Say so.
How People Over-Trust a Single Number
The lucky-sign column. Apps highlight a 36 SAV and tell you to launch. Muhūrta looks at the event chart. A high natal bindu sign can be a bias for a start. It is not a green minute.
The Sade Sati panic overlay. Saturn enters the 12th from the Moon; SAV is 23. The blog says collapse. 23 is a few points below mean. The overlay said “slightly lean Saturn weather.” Those are not the same sentence.
The Jupiter inflation overlay. Jupiter’s own AV at 6 plus SAV at 33 is volume, not a wedding. See Jupiter gochara.
SAV as compatibility. Do not subtract his 31 from her 24. This is a natal transit scorecard, not a synastry language.
0 or 1 as a medical sentence. A thin vote is not a diagnosis. If the body is involved, see a doctor.
One Worked Example, No Chart Dump
Take only this: natal Moon in sidereal Vṛṣabha. Saturn is transiting Meṣa — the 12th from that Moon, the rising phase of Sade Sati. In Saturn’s Bhinnashtakavarga, Meṣa has 2 bindus. In SAV, Meṣa has 24.
What you can honestly say:
- Saturn is in the 12th-from-Moon room. That is the named weather.
- Saturn’s own table gave Meṣa only two votes. Saturn-as-Saturn has little natal “yes” in that sign.
- The combined table is a few points under the ~28 mean. The year is not a statistical outlier. It is slightly lean.
What you cannot say: “This proves the first 2.5 years will be the worst.” You have not looked at natal Saturn’s dignity, at which houses Saturn rules from Lagna, or at the dasha pair. A 2 and a 24 are an overlay on a house-from-Moon fact. They adjust volume. They do not write the plot.
If Jupiter is also transiting Karkaṭa (3rd from that Moon) with 5 in its own AV and 31 SAV, two weathers are running. Quoting only the Saturn 2 is fear. Quoting only the Jupiter 5 is hope.
How to Use It on a First Pass
- Name the slow transit (Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu/Ketu) and its house from the Moon.
- Read that planet’s own AV for the occupied sign (0–8). Treat 0–2 as lean, 3–5 as ordinary, 6–8 as thick — as volume, not luck.
- Glance at SAV for the same sign. Note lean / average / thick against ~28. Do not rank your life by a four-point gap.
- Stop. Do not open every planet’s table for every sign. That is how a useful overlay becomes a spreadsheet religion.
The Whisper does not compute ashtakavarga binds. Daily Vedic lines use gochara and the day’s Moon nakshatra. A practitioner who will show which table a number came from is doing this job. A color-coded lucky number is not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a high SAV sign always a good transit? It is a thick sign on the natal scorecard. A thick Saturn transit can be a lot of Saturn. Whether that is useful depends on Saturn’s job in your chart, not on the integer.
Do I need birth time? For the Lagna’s contribution and for house-from-Lagna talk, yes. For a rough seven-planet bindu picture, natal signs may suffice if the Moon is mid-rāśi.
Why does my app disagree with another app by a few bindus? Ayanāṃśa, whether Lagna is in the total, whether reductions were applied, and whether Rahu/Ketu were illegally added to an eight-contributor system. Check the method note before you check fate.
Can ashtakavarga cancel Sade Sati? It can flavor the volume of Saturn’s walk through those three signs. It does not delete the sign-in.
Where next? The transit grammar this overlays: gochara. Saturn’s named walk: Sade Sati. Jupiter’s yearly sign: Jupiter gochara.
