Tarot Court Cards Explained: Pages, Knights, Queens, Kings

Court cards are roles, not celebrity cameos. Learn how to read Pages, Knights, Queens, and Kings by rank and suit — as parts of you, as people in a situation, or as approaches — without turning them into a cast list.

The court cards are the sixteen face cards of the Minor Arcana: Page, Knight, Queen, and King in each of the four suits. Beginners fear them because they look like people. The fear produces a bad habit: treating every Queen as “a woman in your life” and every King as “a boss.”

Read them as roles. A role can be you on Tuesday, someone else in the situation, or an approach the situation is asking for. The picture is a person because roles are easier to remember as people. The job is still a function.

This page sits under the minor arcana suits and beside the Major Arcana.

Rank: What the Four Offices Do

Page. The beginner, the message, the first curiosity. Pages notice and start. A Page of Swords is a question that has not yet become an argument. A Page of Pentacles is an apprenticeship, a budget started, a skill in week one.

Knight. Motion. Knights leave the room. They can be courage or overshoot, depending on the suit and the spread. Knight of Cups moves toward a feeling. Knight of Swords moves toward a point. The cost of Knights is speed.

Queen. Interior mastery of the suit. Queens hold the climate. Queen of Wands holds heat without needing to win a scene. Queen of Cups holds feeling without drowning the week. Queens are not “more feminine.” They are inward competence.

King. Exterior mastery of the suit. Kings administer. King of Pentacles runs the material. King of Swords runs the standard. Kings are not “more masculine.” They are outward competence — which can become rigidity.

If your deck uses different names — Princess/Prince, Daughter/Son, Knave — map them onto beginner / motion / interior / exterior and keep going. The history of the Tarot is a history of renaming.

Suit: What the Role Is Made Of

Use the four media from the suits guide:

  • Wands: heat, initiative, visibility
  • Cups: feeling, bond, weather
  • Swords: mind, conflict, standard
  • Pentacles: matter, work, time

A King of Swords and a King of Cups are both “exterior mastery.” They administer different rooms. Do not flatten them into “authority figure.”

Three Legitimate Ways to Seat a Court Card

Decide after you see the card, using the question.

1. A part of you. Most often correct. The Knight of Wands in a career spread is your heat, not a redhead you will meet.

2. A person in the situation. Legitimate when the question is already about a relationship dynamic — and even then, read the role, not the biography. “Someone is administering the feelings” is better than “your ex, who is a Cancer.”

3. An approach to take or avoid. The Queen of Pentacles as advice: handle this like a steward. The Knight of Swords as obstacle: the rush is the problem.

If you cannot choose, default to (1). Celebrity-casting is how readings become soap operas. Using a court as a chosen stand-in is significator cards.

Courts in a Spread

A court in “the situation” often means the situation is currently a person-shaped problem — a role is occupying the center. A court in “advice” is usually an approach. A court in “the other” is still not mind-reading; it is the role you are meeting.

Two courts together are a dialogue of roles: Page of Cups and King of Swords is a tender question meeting a standard. That can be internal (your feeling vs your editor) or interpersonal. The question decides.

Reversals on courts work well as “the role under strain”: withheld speech, charm as fog, authority without warmth. They work poorly as “evil person.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do court cards feel harder than the Majors? Because Majors are big situations and courts are social functions. Functions require you to stay specific.

Should I assign zodiac signs to courts? Optional and often noisy. If you already know the grid, fine. If you are learning, skip the astrology overlay.

What if I pull four courts? The situation is about roles and approaches, not about a Tower-sized event. Read the conversation among offices.

Are Pages children? Sometimes, if the life contains a child. More often: a beginning, a message, a new skill.

Some patterns only appear when the reading becomes personal.
