BaZi Clash and Combination in Practice: A Decision Method

How to use clash and combination on a real fork: natal structure first, then the year's branch, then one sentence of ordinary language. Not a reprint of the pair encyclopedias.

The clash page and the combination page are encyclopedias. They name the six oppositions, the six unions, the three harmonies. This page will not reprint them. It is a method for a real fork — especially the common one: you are already in a luck pillar, and the year brings a branch that clashes a natal branch.

Parent encyclopedia: clashes. The other encyclopedia: combinations. The practice rule that forbids job and marriage verdicts: reading BaZi without fatalism.

The Method, Three Beats

  1. Natal structure first. Day Master, month climate, whether this chart is already loud or thin in the element the year will touch. If you cannot say that in one sentence, you are not ready for the year’s branch. You are browsing pairs.
  2. Then the year’s branch (and only then, whether it clashes, combines, or completes a trio with a natal branch). Name the natal branch that is hit, and which pillar it sits in — year, month, day, or hour. The pillar is the domain hint. It is not an appointment.
  3. One sentence of ordinary language. No animal names. No “this is a disaster year.” A sentence you could say to a colleague who does not speak BaZi.

If you skip beat 1, every clash looks like fate. If you skip beat 3, you will stay inside the encyclopedia and never decide.

Natal Structure First Means This

Before you open the clash table, write:

  • the day pillar as a pair (“yang Wood on peak Water”)
  • the month as climate (“Metal season, the stem is being cut”)
  • one preference, if you have one (“this chart prefers feed,” or “this chart prefers a place to spend”)

That paragraph is the person the year is arriving to. A Horse year that clashes a natal Rat is not the same event for a Fire Day Master in summer and a Water Day Master in winter. The pair is identical. The chart is not.

If the luck pillar you are already in has been feeding the Day Master, a clash year is weather inside a supportive decade. If the luck pillar has been the testing weather, the same clash year is weather on weather. Do not describe them as equal. Decade method: how to read a luck decade.

The Year’s Branch, Used Narrowly

Look at one incoming branch. The annual earthly branch is enough. Do not also process the annual stem, the month, and the day on the morning you are scared.

Ask only:

  • Does this branch clash a natal branch I actually have?
  • Does it combine with a natal branch (six union) in a way that would bind or recolor that pillar?
  • Does it complete a three-harmony or seasonal trio I was already two-thirds of the way to?

If the answer is “none of the above,” the year may still matter as an element relative to the Day Master. It does not matter as a clash year. Stop looking for a secret opposition.

If the answer is a clash, name the natal pillar. Month branch hit: the climate/work room is the itchy room. Day branch hit: the close room is the itchy room. Year branch hit: the outer coat itches (people already know this as ben ming nian when the animal repeats — a rhyme, not a fine). Hour branch hit: the output room itches.

“Itchy” is the most honest ordinary word I will give you. Clash is movement and renegotiation in a domain. It is not a booked accident.

If the answer is a combination, name what binds. A year that unions with the day branch is a year the close room is pulled toward the incoming element. That can feel like glue. Glue is not marriage. A year that completes a Water frame you already half-held is a year Water gets louder. Whether that helps depends on beat 1, not on the word “harmony.”

Worked Fork: Luck Pillar, Then a Clash Year

Imagine a Jia Wood Day Master born in You month (Metal climate). The natal sentence: yang Wood in harvest weather, prefers feed or company. The current luck pillar has brought Water — a decade that can water the tree. Two years into that decade, the annual branch is Wu (Horse). Wu clashes Zi. This person has Zi on the day pillar.

Beat 1 is already written. Beat 2: the year clashes the day branch. Close room, Water room, the resource underfoot. Beat 3, ordinary language: “This is a year when the close, quiet floor I stand on gets disrupted, inside a decade that is otherwise feeding me. I will not also start a second life. I will keep the one relationship conversation I was already going to have, and I will not use the animal as a reason to quit the decade.”

That is the whole reading. It does not say leave. It does not say stay. It says where the itch is, and it refuses to stack a career verdict on top of a day-branch clash.

Change the natal branch to the month, and beat 3 becomes a work-room sentence: the climate of the job is the itchy part, still inside a watering decade. Change the luck pillar to Metal, and the same Horse year is itch on an already-cutting decade — smaller scope, not a movie about ruin.

The encyclopedias will tell you Wu-Zi is Water versus Fire. You needed that for one clause. You did not need the other five clash pairs to decide this Tuesday.

What Combination Changes in the Same Method

Same three beats. The year’s branch unions with, or completes, instead of opposing.

A year that combines with a natal wealth-element branch can make that element louder or less available as itself — combinations bind and recolor; they do not simply “add luck.” Your ordinary-language sentence should say bind or complete, not “good year.”

A year that both clashes one natal branch and combines with another is a messy year. Pick the hit that sits on the pillar of the fork you named. If the fork is “sign this lease,” and the clash is on the hour while the combination is on the year, do not let the year-coat combination cast the lease. If you cannot pick, you do not have a clash-combination problem. You have an unnamed fork.

Close the Book

Write the three beats on one card. Act on the ordinary-language constraint. Do not refresh the monthly branch the next morning to see if the clash “softened.” Luck pillars as a concept already warned you that annual sits on decade sits on natal. The tables are reference. They do not get to speak last.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to memorize all six clash pairs to use this? You need to recognize whether this year’s branch hits your four natal branches. A table lookup is enough. Memorize later if you enjoy it.

What if the year clashes a branch that is already in a natal clash? The encyclopedia calls that louder. In this method: say “the already-itchy room is the microphone.” Shrink scope. Still no verdict.

Can a combination cancel a clash in the same year? Sometimes a bind absorbs some of a hit; sometimes the year is simply mixed. If you cannot say which natal pillar belongs to your fork, you are not in a cancellation problem. You are in an unnamed fork.

Should I read stem combinations the same way? Same three beats, but stems are roles relative to the Day Master, not animal-rooms. Do the branch method first. Stem merges are a second pass.

Is this compatible with a daily reading? A daily line can mention that a domain is itchy. It cannot run this method for you unless you bring the fork. Bring the fork.

Some patterns only appear when the reading becomes personal.
