What is Hexagram 42: Increase?

The I Ching (易經, Yì Jīng) is one of the oldest continuously consulted texts in human civilization, developed across China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam over more than three millennia. In The Whisper, a daily hexagram is generated from your birth date and today’s date through a deterministic process — the specific combination of these two dates produces a consistent result, framed as fated rather than random. Hexagram 42 (益, Yì) — “Increase” — appears immediately after Hexagram 41 (Decrease) in the I Ching sequence, and the two form a complementary pair. In Hexagram 32, Thunder below Wind with Wind above describes sustained endurance: the consistent movement that sustains itself through genuine renewal. Here, Wind above Thunder with Thunder below suggests expansion with penetrating reach: the bold impulse carried forward by the gentle principle that finds every opening. Duration perseveres; Increase expands.

The core teaching of Increase

Hexagram 42’s statement is among the most unequivocally favorable in the I Ching: “Increase. It furthers one to undertake something. It furthers one to cross the great water.” Both clauses are affirmative without qualification — this is a time for action, for bold undertaking, for crossing the waters that at other times represent too much risk. The conditions genuinely support significant action.

But the commentary immediately introduces the crucial dimension: “When you see good, follow it. When you have errors, correct them.” The time of increase is not a permission slip for undirected expansion; it is a time for acting with genuine discernment about what is genuinely good. Increase that flows toward what is genuinely worth expanding is the hexagram’s favorable condition; increase that flows without this discernment becomes mere accumulation or, eventually, Hexagram 28’s great excess.

The teaching about modeling virtue in times of increase — and following genuine goodness when you observe it in others — reflects the hexagram’s deeper principle. Increase is fundamentally relational and directional. The increase that comes to you, if you are in right relationship with what is increasing around you, generates a virtuous cycle: you increase, you model virtue, others follow what is genuinely good in your example, the increase propagates beyond you. This is how genuine growth in favorable times becomes something more than personal gain.

The image from the commentary — the noble person who, upon seeing good in others, follows it, and upon recognizing their own errors, corrects them — might seem like general moral counsel. In the context of Hexagram 42, it is specifically the description of how to work well with a time of genuine increase: staying genuinely directed rather than diffuse, genuinely honest rather than self-congratulatory, genuinely engaged with what is actually increasing (not just what we wish were increasing).

Hexagram 42 in daily experience tends to present as a quality of genuine expansion and favorable conditions: the sense that efforts are meeting less resistance than usual, that what has been building is beginning to compound, that the conditions are genuinely supportive in a way that they are not always. This is not a feeling of ease exactly — the great river still requires crossing, the large undertaking still requires genuine effort — but there is a quality of genuine support that makes what would otherwise be too risky genuinely accessible.

The most important practical teaching for this condition: don’t waste it on small things. The time of genuine increase is specifically when the largest, most ambitious, most meaningful undertakings should be initiated. This is counterintuitive — we often initiate safe, small things when conditions are good and keep the large things for when we feel we have no choice. The hexagram reverses this: when conditions are genuinely favorable, undertake the genuinely significant. Reserve the cautious, incremental approach for times when conditions require it.

The generosity dimension also appears practically. Genuine increase tends to create a surplus — more than is strictly needed for one’s own immediate purposes. The hexagram specifically addresses this surplus: it flows toward what genuinely needs it. This is not virtue performance; it is the recognition that the increase is genuinely more productive when it moves toward what needs it than when it accumulates beyond what is genuinely useful.

The self-correction teaching is also concretely important. A time of genuine increase is precisely when honest self-correction is most available and most productive. When things are going well, the corrections are less costly and the improvements compound with the increasing momentum. Waiting for the time of difficulty to address what is genuinely wrong is more expensive than addressing it during the time of increase.
